Wife got this for my son and I for christmas. Please post what your preferences would be. We will be using it for general plinking, shooting at steel targets.

The ones that come to mind right off the bat are Leupold and Burris Compacts.

go over to rimfirecentral.com where you can learn a lot of good things .22, especially Ruger's 10/22.
I put the always on sale for $99 Simmons 6.5-20X[ or maybe it's 25] Whitetail Classic on my .22 and .17 HMR however did slide recently and put a Mueller APV 4 -14X on a new .17 HMR. I like to be able to see bullet holes at 100 yards, well not with the 14X.
I'm just an old trigger puller and hunter and by nature would not put a high dollar scope on a non-competition/target firearm though a lot of folks do.
You and your son should try a lot of different brands of ammunition - some will shoot better than others..I like and use Winchester DynaPoints and Wolf Match Extra but your mileage may vary.

Weaver V-16 , Weaver GS 6.5-20X , Nikon SF Buckmaster 6-18X . Also , pick your favorite Reticle ( and especially the thickness of the reticle ) and that will sometimes limit which Brands you can select from .

i have a 6.5x20x50mm target scope on mine. it has fine cross hairs. i baught 3 barska scopes and that is what is mounted on mine. i put one on a old .220swift i had,and one on my old savage model 10le. all three are still in use today. they are cheaper scopes and i've heard alot of bad things about them from other people but i have had great luck with all 3 of mine. i have a mueller scope as well. somebody said the slid down from a simmon's to a mueller, that's very wrong. they up-grade from junk to a mueller. now mueller is not top notch, but they're leaps and bounds better than any simmon's you could buy. i have the 8.5x25x44 tactical scope on my savage .223. until i can get a better scope it will set right there. the glass is decent and the scope has held zero. it passes the box test and always returns to the set zero. i like higher powered scopes on everything but my deer rifles. if you buy a mueller you will like it. now a bushnell banner scope is a good low end scope as well. you won't go wrong with one of those. i always start people out with target scopes to teach them how to adjust for drop on rifles. if you start your son out like that he will be ahead of the game on most normal shooters who think the bullet stays flat( and believe me you would be surprised at the people i see with a gun set at 100 yards wondering why they missed at 300). you can get a good higher powered mueller with target knobs for under $200. they are way better than simmon's. run away from simmons like you feet are on fire and you ass is catching!!!!

i've got an $80 bushnell 3-9x40 on mine. for how it shoots with bulk ammunition i don't see the point in going to a higher power or more expensive scope. then again, there are some heavily modified 10/22s over at rimfirecentral.

No question about it--the Rapid Reticle (3-9X), right here-- www.rapidreticle.com
...especially for what u're gonna be doing with it.

If it is not a dedicated bench gun (I have a Leo 36X on one of mine), then a variable power scope just makes a lot of sense. I have probably 8 or 9 different scopes mounted and I have to say for the price and quality the Mueller APV is hard to beat.

When you scope a .22 you will be well served to make sure that you get a scope with the parlex set for a .22 or a shotgun. You can use a regular rifle scope but if you do not keep your eye in exactly the same spot behind the scope it will move your point of impact. It shouldn`t be enough to cause you to miss a grounghog, but it will open up your groups noticeable from the bench. My scope of choice is the Leupold 2 1/2 x 8 Var X 111 with the parlex set for a .22 rimfire, but that will cost twice the price of the gun and with the accuracy of the 10-22 is far better than the gun deserves. Not that the 10-22 is not a nice little gun, I have 2 of them, but they are not target rifles.

i'll second that the 10-22 are not target rifles. i baught a new 10/22t and was greatly disapointed in it. it is now a total custom rifle and still not as good as any bolt guns. i feel that you would really like the mueller scopes. they have a adjustable objective so you can bring it in close and focus on the targets. the tactical or apv would be a great choice for your sons rifle. a bushnell will be good to if it will focus down to 25 yards or less. hope your son enjoys the rifle.

I dunno... 1/4" groups at 50 yards may not win any serious rimfire matches, but I'd say that is target gun quality. ;)
The scope issue is also why I like adjustable objectives. OR you can alter a fixed objective yourself. I have done several like this to get the paralax set down to around 50 yards. I have noticed no fogging or other ill effects from DIY.
