I don't have any first hand experience with McMillan stocks so I can't comment on them. An awfull lot of folks swear by McMillan and I'm sure there's a good reason for that. They are pricey, but what isn't??
I do have a couple of 700's in H-S stocks and for the money I can't imagine anything being much better. Some say to skim-bed the 700 action in an H-S but mine haven't been and they are the most accurate rifles I own. One's a custom heavy barrel and the other is a factory barrel. I plan to get another H-S for my LVSF as soon as hunting season is over.
700 action in an H-S stock is a great combo IMO.

You might also want to consider Bell & Carlson. I got a couple of there stocks over the last few years and I think that they rank right up there with McMillan. They are also priced better.

both make some very good stocks. Pick the one that has a style you like and is comfortable to you. Another to look at is Manners Composits. I actually like the way theirs are constructed better than either of the other two, and they have a quick turn around, but the styles are a bit limited. I've had HS stocks on a few rifles in the past, but those have either been sold or now ware McMillans, I just wish McMillan wasn't running 6 months out right now.

I have several of each HS and McMillan stocks. The Mcmillans are more expensive, and generally have a pretty long wait time to get them, like four months. Both are excellent stocks, but if time and money are not a big concern, I'd go with the mcmillan.

I bought a B&C stock once. Never again! Maybe I was just unlucky, but it was the worst POS I've ever seen for a rifle stock. One of the $50 Ruger All Weather stocks is far, far better!

Both are real high quality and expensive. I have several H-S and a whole bunch of McMillans. The McMillan marble pattern is nice, otherwise it's a tossup. The best one is whichever has the contour you like and a finish you like, and is available within your time frame .

Holy Cow! I wouldn't own a Ruger all weather stock. I think you must have gotten a lemon. I have more than one B&C and love them.

Thanks everybody. I have been checking out all your sugestions. I am either going to stick with the original H S stocks. Or I went to Elk Ridge and checked out their stocks.

I did an Elk Ridge stock a few years ago. I piller bedded it and it worked great. But I see they arn't taking any new orders for stocks right now. Are they going out of business? May be I'll email them and find out.

If a customer wants a Big Mac stock, we refuse the job. HS is by far the best stock I have ever used.

frank, I have never had an HS... just for my own edification for a similar stock design what are the price differences betweenr an HS, McMillan and B&C?

I've had good luck with both HS and Mac, but the HS is my favorite for comfort and feel. However, the B&C stocks look "OK" on the outside and typically look like a one armed third grader with major sight problems inletted the inside.

Markbo, as for checking prices, all three have web sites and outside vendors on the internet where you can compare prices. It's real easy to do it yourself....

HS and McMillan are both great stocks for me. Can't go wrong with either.

I am sure it is. I just thought I would ask someone that already said he had personal experience.
