Recently had a first cousin pass. He has a 22 hornet that impressed me as a child, but he hasn't fired it in years. Is there a reason that I never hear anything about the 22 hornet? Was it ever "the" thing to have? I am going to the to get the rifle just for sentemental reasons, but I have never heard anything about this caliber. ( cant spell sentamentle )

As you know, it fills in the gap between 22 mag and the 222 & up family. Low noise is one of the selling points along with the ability to roll your own and tailor it to your needs. A popular mod was to AI it or do the K hornet chambering which helped with the brass as well as added another 40-50 yds to it. Some guys love it for fox which are pretty tough for their size. As a friend said, "They take a lot of killin'."

Thanks TAJ45. Like I say, I've never even known anyone besides cousin that had one. Derndest thing.
They are not uncommon at all. I have a couple and use them routinely on prairie dogs.
The 22 hornet seems to have seen some increased popularity the past 10 years or so, possibly because Ruger chambered it in the 77 rifle.
Enjoy it.

they are great little rifles. Carry mine a lot for crows, and asst. vermin. They are a lot of fun in the PD fields. It's not my caliber of choice for coyotes and bobcats. The grandkids really love shooting these rifles.:D

It`s a great little round and I`m sure if you get it you will be carring it alot, at least untill you get another new toy.:D I used to use 1 for squirrel hunting. You had to head shoot them, but you could do it at 75 to 80 yrds., if the squirrel would hold still.

Six, actually. The first was a Winchester #54 I bought for a friend many years ago. He left work and drove from Savannah to Atlanta to pick it up the day I found it. A Ruger #1 with beautiful wood but mediocre accuracy; a CZ #527 Lux (still have it); and three Sako #78 (have one left). I have read that Eskimo hunters use the Hornet for polar bear. I would want a little more gun.

Then there is the one donated to my daughter and her hubby for use as a bedroom gun. (Hornet over 410) I'm a hugh Hornet fan. In my opinion the Hornet is just about the perfect urban dispatch tool. Relatively low noise, plenty of umpf for varmint dispatch and tailorable for a variety of bullet weights and jacket thicknesses. I get speeds kissing 3,000 fps from 40 gr pills and that is nearly 222 speeds. Did I mention that I'm a Hornet fan. The Hornet has become my favorite carry tool for the EASTERN WOODCHUCKS so plentiful in my area. Give it a fair shake and you will likely be impressed with this ole cartridge. Good luck.
