I am going back to Alaska this summer. I have rented a house for a month and since wifey and the twin grandson's (one at a time) are going, I need to get a couple of rods and reels, etc., for the salmon. The house will be about 200 yards from the Kasilov river south of Soldotna. We will be fishing for Kings and other asst. species from there. Give me some tips guys....Thanks

Bruce,
My Dad is a big Salmon fisher, but on the Big Lake. So uses downriggers and Dipsy Divers. When the fish get into the rivers, people are using spawn bags on 15 pound line and floating them along the bottom. I'll email him and get more info about river fishing for the BIG fish.

If you can get them in Alaska, alwives are a great bait fish that work well for fishing in Lake Michigan. Spawn and yarn on a trebble hook work well in the fall when they are running in the rivers.

Bruce, I do Salmon fishing in the Sacramento River in Northern California and
off the coast of Northern California at Crescent City...
I suggest you look at a Shimano Triton TRN-100G

This is a very nice light weight reel and it has a great drag.
I use 20 pound test on it and have caught salmon up to 37 pounds with it.
I have four Tritons and they are all on different poles.
For a pole you will need a medium or medium heavy,
I use both 6 and 7 foot poles (6' or 7' from the reel to end of pole).
It all depends what feels good to you..
These poles are also used to catch bottom fish, like Red and Black snappers and Ling Cod..
Good fishing to ya,
HARRY

Keep those tips and hints coming in. I have always hunted, just didn't take time to do much fishing. Now, I'm enjoying both with those twin boys, but I'm no expert on fishing. But, I do try to teach them all that I can about both sports. THANKS.....

Bruce: Be sure to check regulations for the Kasilof. On some days you can keep a wild King on others only the hatchery fish. I do not think that you can use treble hooks. Spin&Glows work with spawn bags or even imitation spawn. Fishing from the bank can at times be very exciting as you are elbow to elbow with fellow fishermen. Known as Combat Fishing. When a fish is hooked every one will try to get out of your way and most will even give a hand in landing the fish. Good luck to you. I am sure that you will enjoy it!

Bring lots of extra line. I wore the line out on three outfits in one day on the Kenai river in Soldotna ('82). I had to stop fishing because I got arm-weary.

Set the hook!...Keep your rod tip up...don't get slack in your line...don't overtighten your drag...don't horse them...HANG ON!
