I'm working on six project rifles at this time. For myself. Or rather, not working on them. You put say, $100 in a stock, $100 in a barrel, $50 in rings and bases, into a $150 mauser to start with. Then you cut threads, chamber, forge the bolt, grind, sandblast, park, and what have you got? A rifle which shoots 2 inch groups and is probably worth $250. I was in Dick's yesterday, they had rem 700 varmint rifles in .223 on sale for $469 with rings, bases, and a $20 scope. Makes me sad. I want a .223.

I feel your pain I did a couple on Turk actions and ( .220 Swift and .338 Win Mag) and totally understand. BUT, I did it. I gave the Swift to my son and with radical nutmeg varming stock and monster scope it does shoot and never faile to turn heads at his Rifle Club. I got to keep the .338 on the cheap synthetic stock. It weighs about 6.5 # and kills on both ends.

I built a custom 308 on a mauser 98 action and have more money in it than what it is worth--to anybody else.
If I were to build a custom with high resalebilty I would build on a M700 platform.
But I will never sell my custom 308 and I am happy to say I've put 3 rounds in one hole at 100 yds with it recently. I stopped at 3 LOL

I work on these rifles because I enjoy it. A throwback to my youth, old value standards, etc. If one turns out nice enough I give it to a family member. But it takes something away from the enjoyment when I know I can't build a rifle as nice as one which sells for $470. It is like the hot rods we built in the '60s. These weren't really very nice cars, they were cheap, fast, and dangerous.

Cheap, fast and dangerous. This is how I would like to define my women, not by guns and cars.

I gave $ 200 for a pull off 7.62X39 barrel that had been put on a turkish Mauser action. The reason was that some dumby had put it in a piece of $400 wood. Beutiful gun, shoots like crap, and won`t feed from clip. I`m thinking about rebarreling it to .243 or .308. I can tell you this, I would buy another one just like it just for the wood.

It is rare to be able to sell a custom rifle for much more than 50% of your real investment in it.

The magazine box for my P-14 .458x2 American came yesterday for numerich arms. Now this baby feeds. This is going to be one excellent rifle. I went to Falmouth KY yesterday to a gunshop I'd heard about, hoping to find some 45/70 or .458 dies. Lots of dies, no .458. New friends. They have lots of powder and bullets priced from 10 years ago. From a buyout of some other shop. I stocked up. I'm feeling better now.

I fireformed some brass today in the .458. Chamber is 2.2" deep. So I guess I'll have to call it a 2.2"x.458 Norwegian-American. I'm making the brass from 7mm remington mag because I have tons of it. I put about 15 grs bullseye in with a toilet paper wad and cornmeal (I was out of cream of wheat). Cracked the necks, but those get trimmed off anyway. Nice brass. I could have made it out of about any of the belted mag brass.

I think that when someone builds a gun they ten to go a bit overboard when it`s for them different when it`s for a client. My father a master gunsmith all-ways told me build it like your going to pass-it on to your son use the best barrel you can get and chamber by hand and if I ever see you using power tools on wood Ill ####

im sorry, but if your only getting 2MOA out of a custom rifle then your doing something SERIOUSLY wrong. maybe its the fact thats your only spending $100 on the barrel. if your not going to use good components to start out with, then its not even worth building.
something is wrong though. whats your complete parts list, and labor list for this rifle you say is only shooting 2MOA.
dont worry about what the rifle is worth, toys like this are not investments, so you just need to make sure its what will make you happy.

you may be screwed before you ever get out of the gate. I would opt for two really good custom guns over 6 cheaply put together guns any day of the week.
Only a rich man can afford a custom gun built with poor quality components.
