I was having a 22-250 built for this ground hog season. It does not look like I am going to have it this year. My goal was a 22-250 with a faster twist to stabilize the 75 grain pill. I found a laminated stock Savage varmint rifle in 22-250 with a 1in9 twist. What do you guy's think of this rifle?? Tom.

I felt so strongly about the Savage quality that I got rid of the Browning, Ruger, Winchester and Remington rifles and replaced them with Savages. I kept the Browning 1885 with the octagon barrel just for the "cool" factor.

Sounds like your looking at a BVSS? I have put most of my actions in BV stocks as I like it alot. The cheaper walnut stained birch stocks and the low end synthetics are basics, usable for most, hated by many "experienced" shooters.

With that twist rate, it might be a LP Varminter, I'm not sure. My 12 FV had a 12 twist.

I may be biased, but I don't think you can go wrong with a Savage these days.

i have nothing but savage centerfires now. i traded my last m77 .223 target rifle dead even to a brand new savage rifle 2 years ago. best trade i ever made:D !!! i haven't baught a remington in over 7 years now. matter a fact i sold them all and replaced them with savages. parts are widely availible for them and they simply perform flawlessly for me. i have a .22-250 in a stockade prairy dog special stock. i love this rifle. savages aren't the best looking guns made, but i over look the cosmetics for the performance value of them. i love them and have been signing their praises for many many years now.

All 3 Savages that I have owned in the last few years have been above average shooters. I've had a 110fp 300 win mag(.75"groups), a 12bvss-s 223rem(.3-.4" groups) and 11f 243(.7"groups w/factory pencil bbl). The son in law had to have the 300 win mag and my oldest grandson took the 243 for coyotes. I chambered a #5 douglas CM barrel for the 243 and it shot low 3's with varget and rpvb 80 gr bullets with the first load we tried. That was good enough for my grandson, so our load developement was over. I just picked up a Savage RB/RP single shot target action that will be a 243 for now and a 6br later. I don't think that you can go wrong with a Savage.

I recently sold my third Savage. I keep finding good deals I can't pass up.

Then after using it a while, I get tired of the bolt lift effort, the loose-fitting bolt baffle annoys me, and the fat stock makes it feel like carrying a Garand.

I seem to be settling into the CZ 527 for small varmint cartridges, but have 1-2 of about everything else, too.

Someday I'm sure I will find another Savage to live with for a while. But I just can't love them.

What Bruce said about the CZ 527 is definately true. But in the last year I find my CZ being left in the vault whike I spend most of time with my Savage, a built up .22-6mm and, or my AR in my pick-up. If I`m going to due much walking the Savage stays in the truck, but if I`m wanting to shoot something way out there I grab the Savage. I shot 1, 3 shot group at 600 yrds. just over 2 in. The thing I like most about the Savage actio is that from now on I`ll change barrels on it myself.

I take the Savage 12fv .223 out and nail ground squirrels alomg side my buddy who has a custom Rem in .223. He will sometimes stop shooting and look at my gun and say, man that thing sure shoots. $550= gun, stock=$266, rings and base= $150, scope=$475. this Savage will shoot some very small groups.

He has more than this in his bbl, action and trigger. It shoots nice though.

I've had two, they shot good and all, but nothing so spectacular to make me have the revelation and trade/sell everything else to get more of them. They are good rifles for the money, but since I'm spending my money, I'll get something that shoots as good and is built better (like a Remington).

But the Predator model really looks good. I would want one with a floorplate though. Darrel

I'll let this Savage target say it all for me.

they have really rough barrels on the rifles that I have had...may be just luck of the draw for me.

All of the savages shot like a house afire, but barrels were unreal rough.

I really like the lack of a screw in the tang, just a "center" screw, and the barrel nut is a plus.

My buddy gave me a nice Remington 700 for a welcome home gift after my first tour. I thanked him profusely.....then gave it to my daughter......who sold it and bought a Savage .17MK2 and a Leupold.

All my bolt guns are Savage.

COL Boddington himself admitted, the best group he ever fired was from a Savage in .22-250.

BCP, check out the American Classic. I think that's what's you've been looking for :)

at one time my gun collection was over 60 strong. you can guess i have owned a few of everything. this is my mind set on it now. you can buy a savage and pay much less for it and have a great shooter, or you can buy a higher priced gun and have a gun that shoots as good as a savage for much more. i've talked to people who own bore scopes and say that barrel shouldn't shoot at all, and when i produce groups that they can't get out of a remmy they are simply puzzled. i love to sit next to the remmy guys at the range. it's fun to see them cuss and make faces when i take the lowly savage and do what they can't. you can have the bolt retimed and use your thumb to lift and close it with ease. i've noticed people who are brand loyal hate them and say how thier rifles will out shoot them, but have nothing but excuses when they are at the range. much like the 10/22 owners when you bust them with a low priced savage markII. savage has realy come a long long way in the past 8 years in producing the most accurate out of the box rifle you can get. i've owned everything from pre-64 winchester model 70's on. savages have shot well enough to get my attention and hold it. why pay more? sure a fancy stock is pretty, a high priced name is ok, but performance is what we all look for. i'll take a ugly gun that performs everytime out over a pretty gun that doesn't. people used to biuld nothing but remmy 700 actions. that is changing now. pay close attention to the savage shooting team. they are stomping remington into the ground with rifles we can buy striaght from savage. not custom shop rifles but assembly line guns. that speaks volumes to me as well. we can all buy what we want, i'll take a savage over a remington any day and twice on sundays.

I even sold a Cooper 204 that shot about the same as a Savage, kicked myself in the butt over that, twice the money, less velocity (due to shorter barrel) and not as comfortable to shoot on the bench. Do yourself a favor and get a Savage with a Bushnell elite 4200 scope and save yourself a ton of money AND frustration!

you can have the bolt retimed and use your thumb to lift and close it with ease. Why should I have to pay extra to have it done right?

No argument here about the accuracy of Savages, or the innovations, or the design. But they just don't "feel like" precision machinery to me.

I never could keep a Rem 788 or buy a Win 94 or AKwhatever either. Same reason. It isn't a matter of performance but a matter of feel. It is emotional, not rational.
