Went hunting jack rabbits for the last time this year here in SW New Mexico. Rode my atv to many of the long washes that I could think of. The early morning walks were the most productive as I shot 4 jacks, with my Ruger single six .22, in the first hour of walking. Late morning after a cup of joe I went to the last area that I have known to be good cover for 'em. There I shot 3 more but my legs were getting sore and I needed water. Upon arriving at my Polaris I spotted 3 javelina in the wash below. Had plenty of time to watch these peculiar critters root up prickly pear cactus to eat the roots. My presents did not seem to bother them much as they casually walked off, browsing along as they walked. We have to head back to Montana Wed. and I will miss this desert play ground. Weather here has been very warm and sunny. Back home is cool and rain is falling. If any one has the opportunity to spend time in the "Land of Enchantment", I whole heartedly recommend you do so. Great food, good times and enjoyable winter weather!

I shoot jacks on BLM land north of Deming, NM. This is all desert dry land and lots of trails/washes for atv travel. Have put on over 900 miles on my atv this winter.

MEDIC 40,
Can you let us know how the turkey hunting is down there? I hunted the Jemez mountains NW of Albuquerque pretty hard this weekend. Nobody heard a gobble. The only thing, aside from bootwear, to come out of it was seeing some mountain lion tracks and a bunch of deer.
I've never hunted Mayville and may give it a try if it sounds good.

to bad we never got together for a bit of calling, next winter when you get down I will be living west of you in Tucson. For you guy's heading down to hunt Turkey I was between Ruidoso and Cloudcroft a few weeks ago and there were good numbers just south of the Apache Reservation. Did not see many as far south as Mayhill and Dunken last time I was through there in March. Have a safe trip home Mtgunner.
