I would go 6.5x284 because of the bullet choices. For me the only positive to the 308 is barrel life and probably a ever so slightly lower per round cost.:D

.308 because barrels aren't cheap and 600 yards is well within it's effective range.
Actually if 600 yard paper was my game I'd look realy seriously at either a 6BR or 6 Dasher.

Of the choices, 308 for barrel life. Otherwise, I'd go 260 or 6.5x55, for less recoil and better ballistics. Personally, I went with the 6.5x47 Lapua.

6BR or 6 Dasher better accuracy, less powder= longer barrel life

Since I got that .458 up and running I have been browsing through books looking for loads, bullets, etc. Eventually I came to the obsolete cartridge section of "Cartridges of the World". The interesting thing was the number of "Creedmoor" cartridges which were used in the 1,000 yard matches 1870s-1880s. They all used about a 500 gr bullet at 12-1300 FPS. Talk about Kentucky windage!

I think your screen name says it all. 6BR would be my only choice.

between the 2 it doesnt take much to see that the 6.5X284 is a better choice for pure ballistics, and bucking the wind. but you pay for that performance with barrel life.
if you dont mind rebarreling 1500-2500 rounds than by all means get the 6.5-284. you could even look into other 6.5/260's but barrel lift still wont be that much better.
a 308 has no problem at 600 yards, very accurate, brass is cheaper, bullets are cheaper, and barrels are cheaper. with a quality barrel your going to get atleast 5000 rounds out of it, and can exceed 10000 before accuracy degrades.
so the conclusion. if you want to pay dearly to get the edge that the 6.5-284 offers at longer ranges then go ahead. but personally i would not. brass and bullets arent cheap, and barrels and even more.
another nice thing about the 308 is if you dont feel like sitting and reloading, there is tons of quality ammo available, and you can even pick up 200 round portuguese battlepacks for about $100 for 200 rounds and in a rifle that shoots good will still hold 2MOA if not more, and that is plenty fine for just blasting stuff.

so I would look at the 6 BR, 6 Dasher, or the 6.5 x 47, all of which would be much more enjoyable to shoot.
