View Full Version : Where can I get...
Where can I find pics of the results of different calibers on ground squirrels?
I've seen what a 150gr .270 does to them at a couple hundred yards  and it's quite impressive. I've seen what .22lr does to them at as little as 25 yards. :( boring
This weekend (if weather holds up) I'm going to see what 80gr .243 does.
But I'm hoping there is something that is less expensive that gives explosives results.

It don`t take alot to blow up a ground squirrel. You can start with a .22 Hornet or a .17-221 and any thing larger will pretty much destroy they.

When we shot them as a kids my 220 Swift would kill them so good there was nothing left to take a picture off except for maybe some bloody dirt. 52gr SMK sure make a mess of them.
I found videos of different varmints (including ground squirrels) on you tube.

Our own DAA puts these incredible videos out. Lots of great footage. You might even see an Afghani Taliban guy get shot with a 50 Cal.! Right Dave! ;)

Out to about 150 yards, the .17HMR is a hoot! Beyond that any of the standard varmint rounds will do great. If you are handloader their are dozens of choices. If not, the standard .223 is probably the cheapest and the most versatile of all the commerical rounds because of the huge variation in bullet weights/types.

I can send you several GRAPHIC pics of squirrels and prarie dogs. I have some fresh pics of Columbian ground squirrels I shot yesterday with my .17 Fireball and a 25gr. Nagel V-046 bullet. We usually try not to post those pics here as they can backfire on you. One squirrel with my .204 Ruger was totally scrambled.........

First post wants, red mist info, refers to the same films the PD Lovers in in Colorado use in their brief to the CDW.
Sorry but I smell a Rat.
After a few more post showing a true interest in what we do and I'd share some info.
My Opinion Only
Ok, I'm busted. I'm a PC, squirrel saving, tree hugger. Now, all you drop your guns and up against the car so I can frisk ya.
The prior statment was a joke.:D
If you read my original post you'll see my intentions are pure.
My 10 day wait period will be over on 04/28. I'll be picking up my
Savage 93R17-FVSS. Today I ordered a set of Weaver X-high mounts from Natchez (I also rounded it up for the NRA youth fund) to make sure my Weaver 4.5-14X44 Mil-dot tactical scope will clear the bull barrel.
On an other note, I've decided to not use my .243 Browning A-bolt for Varminting. After just a couple rounds the barrel was to hot to touch. And I like to watch the handi work for the round as it sprays some red mist. The recoil of the .243 is a bit much for instant gratification.
Someone mention the .22 hornet and a .223. The Hornet will be next in line if I'm not satisfied with the .17hmr. Then up to the .204. Then a .223. I'll stop there. If I go up to the .223 it'll be in the form of either a DPMS or a Vulcan arms AR. I may just go with the DPMS because they offer lefthand uppers and bolt. That would perfect for the 14 year young Varminting lovin' son. Who got his 1st .22 rifle (Marlin 15yn) at the age of 6.
How more posts of true interest do I need?

mk9: After about 40 years of sniping ground squirrels, I can say that when you get to the 204, you'll be satisified completely. I still own and use centerfires in 17, 20, 22, and 6mm for chucks, PD's, and squirrels, but the 204 is quickly becoming my favorite caliber for these pesky varmints. It shoots as flat as my Swift, but uses less powder, less noise, almost no recoil, see your hits, etc. I like the caliber so much, I just built another one.
By the way, you might want to consider a bolt or single shot rifle for that 223 as many ranchers in these parts and others that I frequent, do not allow "assault rifles" on their property, no matter if it's a flat-top, semi-auto, or used for DCM competition, they just don't want the image it presents. One old boy I know is also a veteran, but does not want his neighbors to see those rifles on HIS property.
I'm former military, have used AR's for coyotes and have enjoyed them emensely, but just a note of caution, as it's no sense having a tricked out AR if you can't use in on the best rat ranches, and the best squirel shooting is always on private land. Now out on BLM land is another story...... But I'd opine that you're not a bunny hugger, welcome to the board.
A different handguard, a flush 10 round mag, a flat top and remove the evil front site. It may start to look like a regular rifle. what do you think?
