This is a crappie caught yesterday by my good friend and also our Youth Minister at my Church. The fish measured 18 1/2 inches long and weighed 3 pounds and 11 ounces.

Nice Job
Not there is a pan-full.
Remember in my youth when we would catch "the run" and bring home a cooler full of "slabbers", what a fish fry.
Never caught any that were over 18 inches, but many in the 12 inch range. Such does bring back some great memories and makes my mouth water.

We have some 18+ inchers in our pond, but they are sluggish compared to lake crappies. They have had it too good. The pond had a stratifed selection of fish. A billion small sunfish, and a dozen or so huge crappies. The crappies just sit and open their mouth when they want to feed. I put in 5 doxen 12" largemouth and 5 dozen 12' hybrid strippers to give them some competition. That was about 8 months ago I hope to see some significant growth in the stripers, they are supposed to eat 3 times as many sunfish as the bass. The pond is only 1-1/2 acre, but 1 acre of it is over 14' deep. We didn't even know the big crappies were in there until we asked the state to survey the pond. Any bait we cast out was hit by the sunnies and warmouth bass before it got down to the crappies. The state biologist suggested we kill the pond and start over because of the warmouth bass and hybrid sunfish. He said the largemouth won't be able to spawn. I said hell with that we'll just keep adding predator fish and have lots of action. I also put in 150 8" channel cats. There are also some monster cats in there but they don't seem to bother the sunfish. Anyway, knowing the crappies were down there, I started to fish for them. I use a fast sinking walleye rig to get past the bass and sunnies. I have to cast alot to catch one, about 2 hours, but it is fun. Ther is supposed to be a 24" in there but i haven't seen it and it didn't show up in the survey (they only bring in about 25%).
