DAA and I went on very different chuck hunt. We started the day doing chuck control at a golf course. The course was closed and only allowed short range weapons on the property. We had shotguns, a bow and an air rifle. We used only the scatterguns and shot 27 chucks in under three hours. It was really strange to shoot chucks with the shotgun at first but soon it became a lot of fun. A few of the chucks were shot at very close range right from the cart while others we had to hike and really work for. We both had not hunted anything with shotguns in a long time and the distinct smell of shotgun powder really brought back some fond memories from my youth.

After lunch we headed up to some public land and shot 10 more chucks. This hunt we hiked along a canyon rim and shot while standing with tall shooting sticks. The winds were tricky and some shots were over 300 yards but we managed a respectable hit ratio. Dave was shooting his Remington 22-250AI and I was shooting a new CZ Varmint in 204 Ruger.

The last stop was some private land and we killed another 14 chucks. This shooting was done off the truck.

The weather, company and beautiful terrain made for a great day.

Here is a picture of two chucks we shot just as they lay with Dave kneeling. Dave never say the larger female I tried to direct him to in the picture so I shot it. He shot the little guy while only it's head was showing. I told him they would be very close together!

... more 'hogs than I shoot all this year, and right now, I have only seen 1 in shooting distance anywhere I can hunt, and it was going full tilt to it's hole. Some years by now I've killed 20 or more, but not the last couple. Think the local "explosion" in the eagle population may have something to do with it.

Things hereabout are slow so far, with the farmers just having planted their corn, the fields having been brown and nasty looking for several weeks after being shot with herbicide while they waited, wondering whether to invest in corn again this year. Last year 80% of the local guys lost almost all of their corn crop to drought. Beans didn't do bad, and are cheaper to grow, so lots were waiting to see which to put in.

I'm jealous!

I usually kill several hundred rock chucks each year. I have around 100 killed so far in four trips out. Our chuck shooting slows down much earlier than yours back East. Once into the first or second week of July the chucks have gone back down for the year.

Chuck shooting with a shotgun can be a blast. (pun) I've killed a fair number of chucks with a scattergun. A couple of years ago I speed walked thru a knee high alfalfa field with a 20" barreled Remy 870 at the ready. I had a ball. I once killed 18 chucks in an afternoon with a Mod 37 Win. single shot 12 ga. There is something to be said for fast walking thru a bean field or an alfalfa field with a shell belt full of your favorite 12 ga fodder around your waist. Again, congrats on the fun day afield.
