How do you find places to shoot varmints on private property in Northern VA MD and South central PA?t

I have found that the only true and effective method is a lot of research and door knocking. You can go to the local tax assesors office for names of local farmers/ranchers. A visit to the county extension agent, if there is one in the east, to find who has what crops and what is planted. A local seed company is a good information referance. Then knock on a lot of doors, ask questions about varmints, ask for permission to hunt. A good method is to have a preprinted sheet with your name, address and hunting license on it. This given to the owner upon first meeting will tell them that you are legal and serious about being safe and careful. They will know who you are and have your info inhand. I have used this method for yrs. and have found it to be effective. BTW, I have also offered my time and energy to help do chores, fix equipment or just help at planting/harvesting time. This in itself has garnered many a longtime friendship that continues today. Hope this helps.

I have always found the best time to ask permission is when the farmer is putting up the last of the hay in the field. They have dropped the axles of their tractor, bailer, tetter, and rake into the ground hog holes several times over the previous couple of days. This is the best time to catch the farmer's. Then wait 3 to 5 days after the next rain to hunt the field. Tom.

Head West on route 70 from route 81. I'm not sure who's hunting that 50 mile stretch but it looks great. Every time I travel it I see groundhog after groundhog. Nice kept alfalfa fields and shots from 100 to 500+ yards. I keep saying "one day I'll stop and ask" Truth is I doubt I will since I haven't in 20 years. Good luck.

Why not. If nobody else is going to ask we might as well. I'll be heading that way in the next couple weeks. If I notice the alfalfa cut I'll e-mail you and maybe we can get together and bang on some doors. I'm not sure if it was WV. or Md. where I was seeing all the hogs but we can give it a try.

I used to say the exact same thing. The truth of it is, I hated to knock on doors, and I had enough places to hunt closer to the house.
