I talked my buddy into going groundhog hunting yesterday... we went to this field that used to give up some decent numbers of whistlepigs.... only saw 1 and let him get it with his new 223... bugged his eyes out at 150 with a 55 grain Sierra... then my dream finally came true... we heard this ruckus across the field.. sounded like a bunch of juvenille crows screaming, then this turkey flies over the fence and travels parallel with the fenceline with Jr. bringing up the rear nipping at his tail feathers... my buddy says "coyote"... it was my shot and so I got my 22-250 8 twist beaded on him as he disappears back into the woods. MY buddy Ogden starts calling with his mouth and hands only ... it sounds great!!! Dying whatever... about a half a minute later this guy appears right back from where he disappeared from... I still had the crosshairs on that spot... he did that 2 second hesitation and I touched the trigger. I busted him at 315 yards right in the chest with a Starke 68 grain RPVB. He folded up like a sack of potatoes and We claimed our prize. Had to put him in the garbage bag cause he was full of ticks. It was a wonderful day and I was amazed at Ogden's calling technique... he just used his hands and mouth and got that critter to respond! I guess I need to get him to go calling with me more!!!

Brett, the coyotes have been making an impact on the groundhog numbers here .... the field we were in yesterday, i hunted late last fall one day for 3 hours w/ no g- hogs... I walked around then saw the scat on top of the holes... before we wasted time yesterday we checked out the holes to make sure they were fresh... most were.

Good on ya' shooting the coyote. I'm seeing very few groundhogs this year in S.W. Virginia. I usually have already killed a dozen by Memorial Day (when I officially start the groundhog season off )but this year I have only shot 5 and by the looks of things I may not see that many. We are just now getting the first cutting of hay up so I'll know for sure in a couple of weeks but its not looking good.

Hey Swamprat, it's just a thin plastic mirage shield velcroed to the top of the barrel, keeps the heat waves from coming up thru the viewing area of the scope. Sam

Grats on busting your 1st yote Sam!!! yeah yeah I know I blow in and blow out of here like smoke.
I've been so darn busy as of late with racing on the weekends and life. Heck up untill yesterday the last time I fired a firearm was last deer season! I had a brand new pistol I got for christmas that was unfired and checked the 0 on my bushy... then today I happened to pass a gun shop , stopped and bought a springfield M1 Garand NM ultra match :)
Hey did you guys make your yearly trip to CT yet this year?
