i just picked up a marlin 917V about 2 months ago.Put a bushnell 4-12-40 AO on for scope and cant believe how accurate these little 17s are.Out for ground hogs this morning and drifted 3. I paced off the farthest and it was 237yds.It took me 2 shots off the sticks but it is the best [Luckiest] shot i have ever made.First shot about 4 feet in front so I raised to about 18 inches high and he was dead before he tipped over.

I've owned several HMRs (still got 5) and they've all been accurate. The little HuMmeR is just an inherently accurate round.
BTW........... Welcome to the forum.

.17HMR starts dropping so fast past 150-175 that I only take a poke that far if nothing else is showing and I can't get any closer. Out to 150 I'm on 'em. I probably just need to shoot more!!! OK, I'll do it.

A good rule of thumb. The average prairie dog stands about 9"s tall.
The drop of the .17HMR from 100 to 200 is 8 1/2"s.
Sight your rifle in at 100 yards as 1 1/2"s high.
If target is at 100 yards or closer, aim at body mass or lower.
If target is at 200 yards or closer, aim at head or just above.
If target is beyond 200 yards, aim 6"s high.
Beyond that, adjust accordingly.
Remember, there is more mass below the head for the bullet to hit.
If your after head shots you have to get in more practice/shooting.
I waited many years lusting after a 17magnum, until Hornaday took over and gave us all a HUMMER. I limit my shots to about 160 yds. At 125 maybe 130 they knock jacks off their feet like I'd never seen. I'm used to 223 or 22-250 dismembering them or 22 LR tipping them over, but the HMR literally knocks them off their feet. IMO it's the perfect close range pest control device. (don't tell the neighbors but it's not cats littering their yards with bird pieces but another type of SAVAGE, I hate grackles but they do explode nicely.)
I've shot five different HMRs, Savage, Marlin, Ruger, CZ and T/C Contender. They all show ammo preferences but are all at least decently accurate (1.25 @ 100 yds). Now if the price of ammo would drop I would test mine alot more.

I agree with OLE' MAN RIVER,he is right on the money good sound advise. With a little more practice Petes you will beable to drop them with ease out to 200 to 250 yards.Good luck to you and happy hunting.
