So what parts changes besides a 17m2 barrel have to happen to my
10/22 to turn it into a 10/17? Also do I need new mags?

well as far as i know u just need the barrel, the .17 mach 2 cartrage is relatively the same length as a .22 long rifle, so the cartrages will fit in a standard magazine and run through the action just like a .22 lr. hope u have fun with it man it has to be an awesome shooter.

you need to increase the mass of the bolt and tension of the spring. there isa problem of firing out of battery due to the pressure curve. kits are available from E.A. Brown. it is not just a barrel swap for a simi auto. a bolt or lever action is another story.

The new handle will be much heavier than standard as will the spring rate. The extra mass is required to prevent the bolt from opening too soon. Everyone who offers a barrel will offer a bolt as it is unsafe without the extra weight. It is like putting in a recoil spring for light target loads in a 1911 then shooting +P's, pretty darn exciting. Most manufacturers offer a kit, which is how I went, to help reduce any liability. Hope this helped.

Most retailers will not sell you a HM2 barrel for a 10/22 without the heavy bolt handle or, in the case of Volquartsen, an expensive replacement bolt.
I have a 10/22 and a Charger converted to 17 HM2. I'm using the heavy bolt handle which comes with the EABCO (E Arthur Brown Co) kit on both of them. They are both reliable and accurate not to mention a hoot to shoot. The factory .22lr magazines work just fine.

I'd recommend a stroll through rimfirecentral.com to find more info on this conversion. There are guys there, and at least one here, who will have a ton of helpful info.

Just replace the hammer spring in your trigger group with a Magnum hammer spring. It provides all the resistance you need. Just don't radius the rear of your LR bolt. Built 4 of them with just the spring change and no problems with blow ups.

Thanks for the info guys. I just replaced the fire control groups springs,
and have it down to about 2.5 lbs. I think I will go with the kit plan, and
have the bolt handle and spring absorb the additional forces of the the
17m2.

Thanks again,

I found the barrel at Able's for $266. It is a Magnum Research graphite wrapped. It shoots better than the Stinger barrel that was on there. I have only tried hornady so far. The trigger is a Kidd trigger. That is the best trigger for a 10/22 10/17. They are $289, but worth very penny. It is adjustable down to oz's.
Yes you do need the heavy bolt handle. I found there is more recoil than with the Stinger yet the M2 is a necked down stinger. I am guessing it is because of the heavier bolt knob. Check out the Kidd bolt handle. They are working on one that is weighted with tungsten.

One thing I experienced on mine was an issue with the charging handle(Magnum Research) hitting the back of the receiver opening when it recoiled. I was using a Weapon Kraft bumper and changing it out didn't matter, it still hit and was flaring the opening. Mine has the CPC bolt mod and I'm not sure that was a factor, regardless I still had to open it up or risk it damaging the receiver. Mine was a Boyds kit which I believe was a ER Shaw barrel, accuracy at 50yds was good, 100yds is so so.
