I know a lot of people have this rifle and they are pretty accurate right out of the box for most shooters, but, the action/barrel screws have only plain wood or thin stamped metal to torque down to from the factory. I am contemplating doing something about bedding this action and providing a little more positive bottom for the action screws. I am wondering what others have done to these little rifles to make them more stable, if anything.
With aluminum pillars. took much grinding to get the contours right. I used a Boyds stock, UnFinished DropIn. Did not save much here but I truly love building them. Only work done is a two pound trigger pull with just a touch of creep.

i piller bedded all my savage rifles as well. the action bolts go into a long rod that is male threaded on one end and female threaded on the other. i used hollow threaded lamp posts for my pillers. you can take a 3/8 drill bit and drill the holes out. the rounds will screw right in after that. i would set the action in and screw the rods in till they were allowing the action to sit nicely on them. then i marked them and took them back out and cu them with my air powered cut off tool. then i just put them back in the stock. the back side of the front hole will bust out, but there is enough wood left to hold it securely. if your ganna glass bed it like i did mine you can use some of the beding to repair the broke spot.

Gentlemen, thank you for your replies. Kid, that Boyd stock makes that rifle look very serious, indeed, and I am thinking about a new stock sometime in the future. Gonzo, your solution made so much sense I rushed right out to the hardware store for threaded nipples before they closed. I do plan to glass bed this action. Thank you for sharing your experience. Kid, that is a great looking job on that stock, and since you "truly love building them," how about me sending mine to you to give you something to do in your spare time ?

heres the boyds stock i did for mine. http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p19/gonzogunner/028_25A.jpg http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p19/gonzogunner/027_24A.jpg
you can be creative with them as well. here was a stock from boyds i did for a ruger m77/22 i tried my best to make a match rifle. by the way if anybody has plans of trying it take my advice!!!!! get a better rifle to start with!!!!! rugers just won't cut it!!! to many flaws to over come!!!! the stock was the factory nutmeg and i used a green jell stain on it and then polycoated it. http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p19/gonzogunner/rugerm77.jpg
here is a savage model 93 .22mag. it's in a boyds ross thumbhole stock. again it was the nutmeg stock and i used a royal blue stain on it. kinda turned out grayish/blue color. http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p19/gonzogunner/photo6.jpg
you'll need to get a model 40 trigger guard from savage i do believe. they aren't that high but they are what the factory uses on these stocks.

get a palm sander that is powered by electric!!! the elbow powered ones will take days to get them down to a working start!!! mine all had huge tool marks in them i had to sand out!!!! it was worth it all when i finished it!! the ruger was by far the prettiest nonshooting rifle i have ever seen. when i pulled it out to show people they drooled all over it. the picture i posted really didn't do it justice at all!!!! it was sharp and in the sun it shined like brand new money!!!! i wish i had standed a different stock that color now!! i still have the others, but i own nothing with the ruger name anymore. wait yes i do. a friend of mine gave me a ruger 10/22 3 years ago. i remember it is sitting in the corner drawing dust!! i might make a lamp out of it!!! no joking!!!

Gonzo, I meant to ask you this sooner but it looks like there is on trigger guard on your Boyd stocked rifle. Do you use the plastic guard from the original stock or something else? Those are great looking rifles, especially the green stock. I plan to eventually replace the stock on my Savage but other projects are taking priority, right now. I drilled out with the 3/8 and threaded the nipple in and cut them off and it came out really clean. I busted a small piece off the front hole but just up inside; it doesn’t show outside. Too busy to mix up the Bedrock right now but I’ll have it bedded by the weekend. The latest report from the coastal buoys is 35 knot gusts and 10-13 foot combined swells. A little too much for my 14’ aluminum ocean boat, so I won’t be fishing for a while!

the trigger guard that fits these stocks come off of the savage model 40 rifles. you can order them from savage. i have trigger guards on all of mine now, but when i took the pictures of them the guard for each rifle wasn't in yet.

The stocks are nice but .... How do you shoot them left handed ? :D
Seriously , I shoot either side , tough to do with a thumb hole stock.
When we do drive by's ,often times one has to shoot with the off hand.(I'm refering to vehicle hunting for rodents in large pastures or old fence lines.)

there are people who make them left handed for right actioned rifles and left handed for left handed actions as well. you just have to know where to look. i'll see if i can find a link to a guy who makes them for you. he makes great stocks.

these rifles get shot off a bench when i shoot them or sitting on a hill looking at crows on the ground below!! for a truck gun i have plain ugly stocked rifles i use!!!! one know what i'm talking about. the ones the stocks look like they've been through hell and back, but they shoot dead nuts on!!!!
