I am thinking of a low budget 22rf bench rifle.

I have been looking at the Remington 580, 581 rifles because you can get barrels for it and you can use a 788 trigger in it as well.

Are there other rifles out there to look at for a low budget build?

i have to mention the savage MKII and model 93.

low cost due to great out of the box accuracy and a great trigger that comes without any gunsmithing.

find a good used or new 10/22 and go as wild as you want to- I can't think of any other .22 with more aftermarket parts available from mild to wild. There are some guys on this board that have some truly awesome 10/22's- show him your pics guys.

lamm, i have to disagree with the 10/22 they are good, but only if you dump ALOT of cash into one. (pulling on the flamesuit)
the OP can start right off with a smooth trigger and a nice fat bull barrel in a savage

Slab, I'm not disagreeing one bit- they all take some $$$, or a whole hell of alot of luck, to get them where we want them. BUT, I was thinking those you mentioned were closer to the price of my CZ 452 .22lr- $450,if he wants one that's awesome out of the box I'd highly reccomend it, but the man said "low budget build". You could build a pretty nice 10/22 for the same money I spent on the CZ - and have rapid fire capability.

And for "cool factor" it's tough to find anything that can beat the Shaw helical fluted barrels for 10/22's- I know that some guys don't care about being "flashy", but if your gonna spend the money shouldn't it look as good as it shoots?

Save your self a lot of time if you want to be competitive in 22 LR Benchrest and buy yourself a good used Anschutz. There are other guns you will get to shoot very well but you're going to drop a ton of money in a build. Am I right George?

I am looking for a bolt action. There will be no 10/22 in my safe unless my wife wants one. I personally dislike the 10/22 because I am tired of all the crazy fanboy attitude on every message board out there. That and I just don't like the 10/22 even with all its parts.

I really want a suhl but it is out of the price range for an all at once buy.

I am thinking of a decent br gun not for formal comp just for some showing off at the range. The orginal gun will be scrapped for noting more than the action. Then as I go it will get a new barrel stock ect.... So I really don't want to buy a brand new gun like the savage.

I have seen a few 580 builds over on RFC and they looked fun. I was just wondering if there were other actions out there that could be used this way.

is the perfect rifle for what you describe. Should be more than enough to get you into the competitive entry level BR and flexible enough to take into the field for plain old fun plinking. I have yet to own a Anschutz that was not a pleasure to shoot and very very accurate. Plus an Anschutz will hold its value far better than a low cost build.

Or some other target rifle, this eliminates the build up. I have a 10/22 that shoots low .4's, could have bought an Anshutz and it may shoot high .3's.
Best advice ever: buy the best you can. when you start cheap or go cheap on parts, your gun will never live up to it's potential. Take your time, build your fund and buy the best you can. This goes for sights and scopes also.

Try a H&R #12, they tend to shoot very well.

Cpt,
I'm with Oleman, Kid and George, the time and money spent on building a 580 Rem you could find a good used Annie and I don't think it would shoot any better.
