Here is my lattest project. It is a Mossberg M46B(b). This was a gift from my dad for my birthday this year. It was really rough starting out. But I soon hope to get it looking real good. I am going to refinish the wood myself but the metal I would like to have a smith do maybe if the price is right.

As you can see below the bluing is not looking too good. The front sights are really kind of cool it has three or 4 different flip up post in the front.

I havent started on the metal prep just yet. But I think the wood is almost ready to go.

Here is the stock wiped down with a wet rag. Should be a good looking piece of wood.

If I do it right it should turn out looking real well.

BTW Scott do you know of a smith that does blueing around us?

Hey Brett:

Looks like a grate project you got going there, but man that metal does look rough. I know it is hard to tell anything real from a picture, could just be some accumulated dirt. I have a Hawkeye bore scope that could really give you a close up view of the barrel at least the first 17 inches from the muzzle. Not sure if we could access the bolt end because I can't tell if it’s a bolt rifle or a semi. Need to have a straight in access get into barrel.

If you want give me a call/email/PM maby we can set up something for you to use the bore scope.

I got the gun tore down to the parts right now. With the barrel removed from the action. My dad has shot it and it turned in some dime sized groups before he sent it to me. I would still like to see what to bore looks like. There is some pitting that I don't think can be removed with sandpaper. I started with 320 grit on the barrel figured I would get me a pack of 600 and 1200 grit to finish it up and maybe throw a polish on it with some flitz before bluing it.

I am getting addicted to working on old guns. If I had the skills and the machines I think this action could be an easy one to machine and make some minor improvements on. Like threading the barrel and maybe a real trigger. Although the trigger is adjustable on this gun. I need to get some stones and polish up the bearing surfaces on the trigger too.

I don't know anyone around us with blueing tanks.

Yah I looked on MidwayUSA's gunsmith finder and it said Don did it but I know he doesn't....

Oh well I will do the oxpho-blue and see how that turns out.

Stopped by Pepboys tonight and picked up some more needed stuff. Man this free gun is costing me a lot of money.

You could always build a parkerizing tank and go that route. All you need is a piece of PVC pipe long enough and big enough for the gun/parts, water heater element, and a rheostat to control the temp. Read up on it and the Browning process unless there is something missing neither looks to be too hard.

Is this your first rebuild Capt? Now would be a good time to do some shaping on that stock if you chose too... I don't know how easy it would be to find a replacement if you really got crazy on it, but you could definitely lighten it up in spots. Just a thought... your refinish looks very well done.

Remember if you do the bluing yourself (and there is no reason you can't) THE number one thing is metal prep. The bluing will hide.... nothing. You will spend lots of hours getting the metal cleaned and polished. Or you could do a matte blasted finish. Or parkerizing. Or Duracoat. Or car paint. Add a clear coat after those latter ones and it will shine like crazy. Just a thought.
