If you were buying a .22 rimfire cause you didn't have one now, but had all kinds of ammo from previous rifles, what would you buy?? Bolt or auto??

Ole just give in and get both. No I'm not kidding I have a Ruger 10/22 that is tricked out and a Anschutz. Wouldn't be without either of them.

you can never have too many rimfires. just too much fun. the old clunky ones go frog shooting with me wading in swamps.

Bolt is the way to go. It just feels right.

The bolt is a must have if I can only get one, but an auto is sure nice at times when you need a second follow up shot and accuracy is less of an issue. I have allot of racoon trouble in the middle of the night and an auto is preferred when I have several show up at once.

What do you want to do with it?

If you only want one .22lr, you'd better get a bolt gun. A 10/22 will continually replicate itself and one day you'll find you have a half dozen...... or more! :o

I like the bolt actions myself.

I would buy a GSG-5 .22 semi-auto rifle. This looks like a HK MP5, great accuracy, loads of fun.

I totally agree.... :D IN spades.

However, I heard from "a very reliable source" here on the forum that he had heard "from a very reliable source" somewhere that they are inaccurate. ;) :p

I guess mine was a fluke maybe....and yours too, Bruce...

My son got a GSG-5 for Christmas. This group was shot rapid fire, iron sights, off-hand, at 25 yards using Remington sub-sonic ammo. No telling what a scope and careful ammo selection would do for it.

Owning one kinda' makes ya' giggle, don't it...?

I don't think anyone could go wrong for any reason by having one.... Like you said, they're top quality, accurate and just plain fun to shoot...

If it where me...I would go with a bolt gun. In either a CZ 452 or a Savage mkII.

Never Mind! :)
I Googled it and found an excellent explanation on the RugerForums.com. There is also another link there to RimFire Central for a further discussion. Incase anyone is as clueless me. > http://www.rugerforum.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=215666&sid=a244f938868b64c015740d8d6a77f8e9

If I could only own one rimfire rifle it would definitely be a lever action. And it would either be a Marlin or a Winchester. And I lean toward the Winchester. However I like them both.

We do a lot of rimfire shooting. And we may have as many as a dozen or more rimfire rifles at a time on the table. The only two rifles that are never laying around on the table are the 2 Winchester lever actions that I take. Every body wants to shoot the lever action. The levers definitely get shot a lot more. And they are much more fun.

The only reason not to buy a lever action is if you want ultimate accuracy. Then the only obvious choice is a Kimber. But then that is a different story. Tom.

A Marlin Lever or a bolt , T bolt Browning . Both reliable .
I have 2 Rugers , I call them ammo burners . They can be accurate but hardley ever out of the box . First off one needs to take the lousy triggers for a fix , second bolt face need machining to sq. Extractor needs help ,The clips are funky , (all the dirt from blow back ) finally you have the cost of a T-Bolt or a Marlin that out of the box shoots well .
If all you are punching is paper perhaps a different rig needed.
