I have the hots for a new rimfire but not the budget to match. A locl shop has Rem 5's on sale for $190.00 to close out.
They don't seem too bad. It appears to be a mauser type or based action. I know Remington is not making them any more. Is there a reason? Has anyone on here own one or have experience wit hthem?

They were never made by Rem, they are made by Zastava a Czech co., and imported under the Rem name. I used to have one of the Charles Daly Deluxe's, made by Zastava, which was the mdl 5 with a walnut stock. I think at the time I paid 175.00 before ffl and shipping and was pretty impressed with the fact that it was an all steel rifle. No plastic clip etc., decent sights. In looking closely at a mdl 5 I can see no difference except the stock which is laminated. As with most of these Czech built rifles they are a little rough at the start and seem to smooth out and shoot better the more rounds you put through them. Mine would shoot Win Power Points at 1"at 50yds which is what I used for hunting and right at 1/2" with good target ammo. At 300.00 which was Rems retail price there were a lot of better options, at 190.00 I think it's a lot better rifle than the Savage offerings in that price range.

I own one of the Remington Model 5 rifles in 22LR. It is an extremely good shooter and it appears to be very sturdy and well made. The metal polish, fit and blueing is very good. I really like the pretty-much full size rifle stock on the one I have. It feels like a full sized CF rifle when shouldered.
I would agree with Chuck on the prices.... I paid just a little over $200 for mine, and I feel it is well worth it when compared in price to a similarly priced Savage, etc. I doubt few folks ever have to pay Remington's suggested retail price for one, but for $300, as Chuck stated, there are better options available.
Zastava is a Yugoslav company (Zavodi Crvena Zastava). They also made the commercial Mark X Mauser action/rifles. CZ and Brno are Czech.
