Went to Wally World (aka WalMart) yesterday looking for 17HMR options.

Marlin 917V $227
Savage 93R17GV $177

Local pawn shop has a new Savage 93R17BTV for $325. Red and gray laminate.

Economics are important but I want my "best value for the dollar".

Would like +/-'s .

TIA

This may be a little more than you want to spend but I'm kicking around picking up a 17HMR myself. If I do it will be a CZ452 American.

I bought the Marlin but at about $160, and it had the compress wood stock looks like hell shoots lights out. Hogged out the forend to float the barrel put in an after market trigger and it shoots with the expensive ones all day. Buddy has a Savage it shoots excellent also, I think they may all shoot and all need a trigger.

Id take a savage over the marlin, and id also recomend you save yourself alot of trouble and cleaning and find one that is stainless steel, well worth the $$$.

I'd get the Marlin. I would be sure to get a wood stocked one if it was me.
The Marlin is a little better built in my opinion but it is a little more money too.
The CZ is obviously better than either but for more money again.

I had one of the Savage 93's in 17hmr when they first came out, plain jane blue with tuppeware stock, it was my first 17HMR and frankly it was a POS. There was not anything I can think of as a positive, Trigger was junk, stock was a joke, clip would not stay in and the kid next door would kick my butt with his 160.00 Marlin. We would swap and I would easily outshoot him, but that never lasted long as he hated shooting my Savage as much as I did. Sold it and upgraded to a CZ, trigger was still junk but the Brooks bandaid's did help a little even though it was just a method to take out the slop in the CZ trigger, just like all the fixes for the Savage trigger which I tried. When I bought mine you could pick up the Marlin stainless in a laminated gray stock for about 70.00 more and after a side by side look have twice the rifle. Not sure what they sell for now and I see Savage is offering the 93 rifles in laminate stocks, but if they are even remotely close in price to a CZ that choice would be simple for me.

Have both and the Marlin is the best Rifle. Savage is good, but not the same quality.

I've never had one in 17hmr but had a couple marlins in 22mag. great shooters.

Go for the Marlin. I have one with the thumbhole laminate stock. It's a great shooter.

My nephew bought the Marlin from me. It has the wood stock and know has a 3# trigger. Very accurate for the money. My first Savage 17 had the plastic stock, which I replaced with a Boyd's Thumbhole and then gave it a 3.25# trigger. Accuracy wise these two are pretty close. My third is a Savage in plastic with the accu-trigger that adjusts down to about 3.5#. Doesn't shoot quite as good as the others. My thumbhole 17 has out shot all of my buddies 17's except me nephews, and we frequently trade wins. The other guns have been Rugers, regular and varmint, a CZ varmint, and a couple contenders.
