That's big of Remington! They'll give me $10 for a box of their HMR ammo? I'm heading for Gander Mountain right now. I think I can get it there for $17 - $18 if I get there before they pull it off the shelves. Kinda' reverse stimulus deal!
Well, thanks for letting us know anyway Glenn

Exactly why would the rifle be recalled "in light" of the ammunition recall? The notice gives no information as to what the problem with the rifle might be, just that there is a problem with 17 HMR Remington Ammuntion. There are other manufacturers of 17 HMR ammo, why can' you use that in your 597? Am I missing something here?

Looks like someone got hurt.....and they are forced to do this.
I have fired thousands of rounds of 17 HMR in my semi auto Ruger with zero problems and plan on firing thousands more.
If you want to send your ammo back, I will take it!

Interesting..have a friend with a 597 and it has been a POS from the outset but ONLY in my opinion.
Pressure signs, bulged case heads, case seperations incluyding two(2) that that blew up/out two(2) plastic magazines..yada, yada, yada..and intially would not shoot accurately at all due to uneven forearm pressure on the barrel.
Now my friend loves this rifle for it's potential..semi-auto function and now shoots 20 gr extremely accurate. He has the technical/engineering skills and God-given patience to perhaps make this dumb thing work...I wish him well.
Story behind this is he fell in love with my CZ 452 .17HMR shooting KS PD's at range but could not get back on missed dogs fast enough for quick follow-up shots with hold-offs [TRUE however I don't take a miss as a personal character flaw].
Too bad Ruger or someone couldn't bring a .17 HMR semi-auto to market at a reasonable price, am sure Volquartson's offering is a fine rifle but I'd rather have a NightForce scope for that kind of money.
Suspect there are more than a few 597 owners like my friend who will try to CURE what ails the rifle.

There's a poster over at Rimfire Central who represents himself as a representative of Remington or at least "connected" with the company. It was he who posted the 597 recall notice and asked them to 'sticky' it. A few of the replying posters expressed their dissatisfaction that they were being offered half -- or less -- of what they'd paid for their 597s. He followed up by saying he'd pass their concerns to the company.
IMO, just three or four guys from that one forum carping over the raw deal is not going to persuade Remington to do the right thing. All of us who have a 597 need to take an active interest in convincing Remington that it will be cheaper for them long term to properly compensate 597 owners than to antagonize them. We need to telephone their customer service and make it clear we will use every means at our disposal -- to include the bully pulpit of the Internet -- to spread the news of what you potentially are exposing yourself to if you buy a Remington firearm.
Failing that, we need to communicate among ourselves and discuss pursuing a group legal action.
Bottom line, if Remington thinks they've only ticked off a half dozen or so of their customers, and all those five or six are inclined to do is sit at home and mope, we none of us 597 owners are going to get a fair shake. But if Remington is given to believe there's a hundred or so really, really angry 597 owners who won't rest until they're fairly compensated (and future sales stand to suffer as a consequence), I think you'll see them making a much more reasonable offer.

That 597 recall thread over at Rimfire Central now is up to four pages and there have been more than a few terse responses.
This (http://www.heavyequipmentforum4you.com/viewtopic.php?f=79&t=278&p=339#p339), btw, seems to indicate the problem is that CCI loaded their .17 HMR ammo too hot!

I"m surprised to see them wait that long. Those rifles have been cutting loose out of battery since their inception. I had the misfortune to witness one up close at the Garland Tx range. Got smacked by a piece of a magazine 4 benches down the line. Go to RFC a do a search and your computer will take about 5 minutes to download all the threads on it. Nothing new.

I'm curious. I assume you sent yours back before Remington issued their lowball offer. Makes me wonder how many 597 owners were treated properly before the bean counters figured out how to screw the rest. Were you shooting Remington branded ammo?
Glad the boy wasn't hurt.

no we were shooting hornady vmax and like said earlier it was bulging cases and when it blew it burned a hole out the back side of the case and thats what caused the clip to explode. only reason noticed it was because the shell got jammed in the action. the sad thing was that gun was a tack driver. you could shoot threw the same hole with it. kinda sad to see it go but the boy really likes his 223 vtr.

To add my two cents worth, I had one go off out of battery in a Volquartsen semi auto. I still shoot 17 HMR, but out of bolt action. It seems the round doesn't live well in semi autos, since its not just Remington thats had this problem.
