I took my new CZ 452 to the range today. I had a bunch of odds and end to break in the barrel around and wanted to see which it liked. So far it is between CCI standard velocity and Remington Target Rifle (Eley). The differences are striking. Both groups (5 round) could be easily coverd with a nickle or less. For the most part the bulk stuff had too many fliers and would spread out to 2 inches with 10 and 15 round groups. BUT, My REAL question is the smell (aroma?) from the Remington Eley. It had a very distinct smell from all of the others. I used 3 Federal, 2 CCI, 2 Remington and some unknown rounds from the bottom of the range bag. The fired round all smelled very similar until I came to the Rem Eley. It was very different. Is it me or has anyone else noticed the difference? I do want to note the Rem/Eley has been around a while because the price on the 50 round box was $4.99 and that was from the mist expensive store in town.

To me, any CCI always smells different. One of my rifles really likes MiniMags, but the smoke makes my eyes water.

I've found it in Midas iirc, Aguila, PMC, anything with "Eley prime" on the box.

Funny how the associations with the 5 senses inter relate........I was in my station at the range one evening with the Model 41 and having a decent night when after a string of sustained fire I had a larger whiff than usual. It was that sweet Eley stuff, shooting Aguila or PMC and thought, "This would be perfect if it smelled 'right' ". You remember how the 22 rifle smelled when you were a kid and shooting was a new thing and you were out with a favorite Uncle or Dad or Brother. The smell of burnt powder was part and parcel to the experience.

Yah, I miss it. Hate that I have to go foreign to get it along with the accuracy balanced with price.

Haven't heard cordite mentioned for a long time. Here's an interesting link on the subject: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cordite

It's the primer mix. That Aguila stuff is bad enough to not want to use it even if it did shoot well. Fortunately it has not in anything I have tried it in.

TDC - get your hands on a brick or box each of Wolf Match Target (MT) and Match Extra (ME). One of these 2 rounds will likely shoot extremely well in your gun. I have never tested a new gun/barrel that would not shoot one or the other into small groups.

And I am talking hunting rifles, not benchrest competition rifles, so everyone just take a breath.

I found a box of Wolf MT at Gander Mtn today. I picked that up along with Federal Champion to try. There were a couple of ELEY sitting there but after the shock of $8.00 ( plus tax) for the Wolf MT I needed fresh air. I almost hope it does not do as well as the CCI SV. I could go broke. Or send my wife to work for the first time in 27 years. The kids are out of college and working now, ya' know !!

TDC I promise you that Wolf MT or ME (Match Extra) - one or the other - will shoot lights out in any sporter type .22 you own. I have built 10 or 12 10/22's. I typically test 20-22 different loads in every new barrel/build. One or the other Wolf rounds always, always is in the top 3 accuracy wise.

Find a box of Wolf ME and test it too. You will be wanting to buy it by the case. FWIW when it is far and away better than any HP round I use an Eabco HP tool in the Wolf stuff to hunt with. Makes a nice hole bigger than standard and puts some POP into it.

Really simple little tool, easy to use, lasts a long time and not expensive.

I'll check around and see who has the best price on Wolf ammo right now and repost.

hmmmm... never thought about it or tried it. I like the open hole so the bullets open up... dont' know if anything in the hole would help or hinder.

BTW best pricing I have been able to find is Champion Shooter's Supply and Cabela's.
