View Full Version : new 17M2 problem?

Bought a used Contender pistol barrel in 17M2. Put on a scope and sighted it in yesterday. Upon firing CCI ammo, I noticed a bulge completely around the case, right at the rim. I didn't have any splits. The barrel seems to be extremely accurate. I shot a 35 yard group (all I could get in the yard), with all touching, probably 1/4" group or slightly less.

My kid and I sure did enjoy shooting it. We were shooting rotten tomatoes and water bottles. We shot the water bottles on end, through the cap. He even videoed the explosions on his phone and sent them to his friends! Pretty cool video too!

I'm wondering if this bulge is either a sloppy chamber, poor headspace with the receiver, or if this is something that's common with the ammo? Any ideas guys? I don't think it's anything to worry about, just want to be sure?

I've been shooting mostly Eley in a converted 10/22 with Volquartzen barrel and bolt. I've added the magnum hammer spring, also. I still get bulges on the rim with an occasional split case, right at the rim, about 3 split cases in maybe 1,500 rounds. The hammer spring seems to have helped.

My problem has been shifting point of imapct and groups that vary from very good to very poor. It's a work in progress. Still a lot of fun in the squirrel fields.

Charlie, try a box of Federal or Eley and see if you get the same result. CCI is pretty hot. If all of the brands do it I would cast your chamber; otherwise I wouldnt think it would be a problem. Is your extraction ok? Maybe the rimfire recess was milled too deep on that barrel?? If so, I would say the manufacturer would make it good. Good luck and keep us posted. T

I was thinking the same thing. The case does "feel" a little deeper than the end of the barrel...hardly enough to measure, but that coupled with barrel/frame gap may be the culprit. As long as I don't have misfires and/or split casings, I ain't gonna mess with it. It's a tack driver.

Not at all uncommon, best thing to do is chuck the case over your shoulder and load another.

It does it in my BSA Martini on the bottom by the Extractor, but in 7500 rounds over the past two years not a single split...lots of dead gophers however.

I have a 10/22 I converted to 17M2 with Majestic Arms 17M2 barrel with Lothar Walther liner, Power Custom handle, and STS trigger.

I have had problems:
1) magazine loader jams
2) two holes touching, third is flyer.
3) case rim blew up, good thing I had safety glasses on.

Clark,

Spend some time browsing on rimfirecentral.com. There are some guys there who have spent a lot of time tuning HM2 conversions and know exactly what they need to operate smoothly and reliably. There are probably a couple of threads running right now about 10/22 conversions.

I've got two of them that function very reliably and are surprisingly accurate.
What do you mean "magazine loader jams"?

Oh yeah. Welcome to GGVG. Best place on the net. :)

I used heavy springs and bolt handles. No issues with either of mine, yet. Very accurate with the Eley and Hornady ammo. Stay under 3/4" at a hundred with no wind, occasionally I'll get 10 into just over 1/4". Squirrels aren't awfully fond of them.

I bought one of the Boyds kits which used the Shaw barrel and Magnum Research heavy bolt handle/spring. Function was fine but accuracy was similiar to yours. Mine had the CPC bolt, replacement Weaponcraft buffer, all the Vol trigger goodies. I then noticed one day that the bolt handle was hitting the back of the receiver slot, even with the aftermarket buffer, so I had to open that up before it cracked. Tried CCI, Eley, Hornady, Rem, Fed, still was erratic, but I'm not convinced that with a better quality barrel it wouldn't have shot well. Sold the barrel and bolt handle, slapped on a GM 22lr barrel and went back to shooting 1/4" groups with it. My experience was not uncommon, several posters on RFC did the same. I have 2 17hm2's now, one an Anschutz, the other a Martini. The Martini will occasionaly have a ruptured case because the bottom of the case is not supported in the area of the extractor cutout. On yours it sounds like it fired out of battery, a common problem on the 17hmr 10/22 conversions, I've just never heard of it happening with the 17hm2. Glad you didn't get hurt.
