Ya gotta shoot some of each to find out what your gun likes. As far as I know, all 17HMR ammo is made by CCI. Hornady 17 gr Vmax is by far the most popular at our shop, and it's the easiest to find. That said, we do get a few people that come in and tell us the FMJ's or 20 gr HPs shoot better than the Vmax's in their guns.

I "borrowed" a used Annie from the shop a few years ago for our shoot and bought 3 different types of ammo to try, all 17 gr Vmax stuff. That rifle showed a DEFINITE preference for a certain lot of Winchester 17 gr vmax loading. (Figures...it's the most expensive too). It shot so well, a buddy bought the rifle next day...along with the rest of that lot of Winchester ammo.

I'd start with the Hornady 17 gr Vmax first and go from there.

My particular rifle and one son's rifle shoots the Hornady 17gr V-Max noticeably better than anything else but another son's shoots the HP stuff better. So far, there's not a lot of different choices out there so it shouldn't take to long to find out PROVIDED you can find the ammo. Hornady is about the only stuff I can buy in my area right now.

My daughter, best friend and I all have Savages. My nephew a Marlin and his father a Ruger. My gun likes Hornady, my daughter's likes Remington as does my nephew's. My friends loves Winchester but my BIL's will only shoot the CCI TNT. Like always buy some of each and test.

I've had several different rifles in .17 HMR. Gave Marlin and Savage bolt guns to a grandson and a nephew. Sold a Savage M30. Still have CZ, Anschutz, Contender, and a converted 10/22 magnum. Every one of them shot the Hornady 17 VMax better than anything else I could find. Midsouth still has that round listed at $9.99 (but out of stock). If you find your gun likes it, you can backorder the stuff and still get that price. I buy it a brick at a time and shipping is less than the cost of one box. I can't get it that cheap anywhere around here.

All that said, the advice to try several brands is good. Even though it's all supposed to be made by CCI, reports are that different guns like different colored tips. ;)

My rifles like the original 17 gr Hornady ammo best. Here is a link to some info on the 17 HRM: http://www.varmintal.com/17hmr.htm
I also like to zero at 100 yards. That seems to work best for me.

You still had some fun. The HMR is good for that but it does have limits. Better get ya' a HM2 next George. Provides danged near as much fun at about half the price.

I'm in the process of building a .17 Fireball myself. Actually, all I'm doing is waiting on a barrel but I have several HMRs and 5 bricks of ammo. I expect the Fireball to be a load of fun but if it runs me off the HMR, I'll have a lot of stuff to get rid of, too. I'll wait and see how the FB turns out :)

Wish somebody made a .17 Fireball barrel for a Contender!

I thought they made any barrel that would safely fire on a Contender frame .
