I prefer to use a pull through cleaner on 22s, 22 mags and 17 Rems. You can buy one or make one from weed eater line by melting a ball end on it to hold a patch. You poke the other end through the patch and pull it through the bore. With some patch material you will need to start a hole with a pointed object but usually the line if cut at an angle is sharp enough to go through most woven fabrics.

Due to the very low velocity of those rounds very little fouling takes place. A single application of wipe out followed by some patches will clean most of them to bare metal. Overcleaning of rimfires is usually the cause of accuracy loss long before accuracy is lost from shooting them. I don't clean my rimfires at all until accuracy falls off or function is impaired.

Midway has bore guides for the 77/22 made by Dewey and Possum Hollow

sinclares has them. i like thier giudes alot. it's funny. at matches the rimfire rifles are cleaned after every round. the barrels normally last for many many years. they are normally rechambered when they start to fall off. i'm having my first custom rifle rebareled right now myself. the barrel was fine that was on it. i just wanted to try something else and restock the rifle at the same time.

Interesting. Never heard that before but then I have never shot rimfire benchrest. My rimfires shoot their best with a dirty barrel vs starting with a clean barrel then shooting a string with no cleaning between shots. I have shot sub 0.11X groups at 50 yards with a dirty barrel that has had hundreds of rounds through it.

I will have to try that some time, cleaning between each shot. Heck I might break 0.0XX" at 50!

As for wearing out a rimfire by over cleaning it rather than wearing it out by shooting it, I should have clarified that I meant "cleaning it improperly" as in not using a muzzle guide / bore guide, improper use of a brush etc.

If your cleaning rod doesn't contact the bore at all and you don't use a metal brush but rather patches only or a clean nylon brush with no metal contacting the bore, you aren't going to hurt the bore as long as you don't let the rod "bounce" on the crown as it exits the bore.

JVR , I like the white plastic type , and the Deweys which look like pencils with different sized Delrin Collars . Most have Bore savers ( O Rings ) and some have Solvent Ports . You pays your money and takes your pick ! I have one marked RG4W52 which I think is from Sinclair and fits a lot of different Brands of Bolt Action 22s that I have cleaned for friends . For Rods , I like Dewey or Tipton Carbon Fiber . I have heard problems with Deweys flaking off their coating , but none of mine have . I've had some 22s slice into that coating when the rod Guide did not cover those sharp metal protrusions on 22s just below the Rod. Cleaning ain't much fun .

not after everyshot. mine would shoot left high the first shot after cleaning. then the second shot would come closer to point of aim. then the third shot was back to dead on. i would also shoot a 4th to make sure.

we shoot at least 25 bullets in a round of a match. we also have simply outstanding great barrels that most factory barrels won't even begin to shoot with. our expectations are much higher than those of your normal shooter.

i will say this. if you are happy just hitting inside the bullseye, don't try matches!! you will get hooked on nothing but the best of the best. just hitting the bulls eye will no londer make you happy. putting 5,20 or 25 rounds in the same whole will be what gets you into the happy place!!!

I made my own pull through out of weed whacker line about 8 years ago. I have not used anything else in my rimfires since.
