I have been happy with CCI SS 22LR in my Ruger 10/22 Shilen Match barrel rifle....USUALLY they are subsonic with the occasional super sonic round.

Threaded my Ruger 22/45 w/ 5 1/2" barrel and wondering what HiVelocity ammo comes out subsonic if any? I've seen velocity tables concerning this but have not seen them lately.

Having fun with 'small sound' 22s!

Looks like one could go 'super' every now and then depending on temp and humidity?
Ever play with the SSS Aguilas [60 gr] out of the BuckMark?
Thanks for the info.

Alan, I have shot the SS Aquila 60 grainers out of my 6" S&W #2206 pistol and they functioned just fine, but did make a bit more noise than out of a rifle. Those cartridges did not function in the Buckmark I had about a year and half ago.

I've got some Bruce,,,,and will see what they do in the Ruger 22/45.
I have a Tasco 3X pistol scope I got from somewhere and will mount it for better shot placement and accuracy [shooter's vision help aid!].

i was trying out some of the sss 60 grainers in a rifle i was shooting for my uncle. i got to noticing they sounded a little louder than they should have. heck i would say alot louder because they were louder than the guy next to me using match rounds. i went to the blazer and got the chrony out and set it up. i had speeds from 880fps all the way up to 1200fps!! no joke guys. my buddy sam was there and read the chrony speeds off to me as i shot.

they tumbled and smacked the target sideways alot and didn't group well. i figured that you would need a faster twist barrel to stabilize them. and after seeing thw wide spread of speed out of that box i was wondering about q.c. down in mexico. some just popped when shot and some were really screamers. when the chips are down i don't know if i could trust them. i think they are in a c.b. short case and can't just figure out how they got enough powder in there to make them that fast.

i still have the box because i stopped shooting it after around 10 rounds.

I don't know of anyone who has turned out happy with that Aguila 60gr stuff, including the ones that spent money on the faster twist barrels. Waste of money in my opinion.

But I have a question... if you a pistol and a supressor, why are you trying to find HV ammo that is subsonic? Why don't you just take some good SS ammo and use it? There are lots and lots of them that are extremely accurate and if you are going to hunt with it you can alter the nose with an Eabco HP tool to put some POP into them.

I have had great luck with CCI SGB, Fiocchi Pistol and Rifle match and the always popular Wolf Match Extra and Match Target. I have used the MT in every .22 I have and it always shoots good.

Because I have a LOT of Hi Velocity 22LR ammo! I just wondered if any of it would go subsonic in a short barrel. I have a lot of CCI SS 22LR [subsonic] ammo and it is mainly what I use.
however I thought given the short barrel a lot of normally super sonic ammo out of rifle barrels might drop below the speed of sound in a 5.5" barrel.
Use what you got, right?

alan,
you could be right. most of the hv ammo is made for the long rifle barrels. it should be a bit slower out of a pistol because in mindset the powder hasn't burnt up all the way yet. this could be wrong and way off the mark.

I have a 10/22 with a Green Mountain 1:9 barrel. It shoots the 60 gr SSS very well but I never shot it through a chrono. It may be louder than Wolf MT which is s-l-o-o-o-w. Remind me to never put that waxed stuff in a semi-auto again. The 9 twist barrel also shot 40 gr loads OK. The 60s tumbled like crazy from a standard .22lr barrel. I think they're about 1:16.

Green Mountain is running a 1:9 special for rimfire central members right now.
