: Anyone loading 204 ruger 32 grainers with Varget?
Since I have almost a lifetime supply of Varget I'd like to use it in the new 204. My manuals don't list the 204 because they are a few years old....I know there's plenty of info on the internet but I'd like to pick the experts brains.
What about other bullet weights with Varget?
Now it's just a matter of getting the dies and bullets.

Sierra shows a listing for Varget, which you probably already know. With the 32 gr bullets it is from 26.0 to 28.8 grs. I tried some quite a while back and the data I saved didn't show much success although I never bothered to go all the way to max. I just haven't had the success with Varget that many reloaders report in most calibers I have tried it in.
I have three 204's and have found for some reason they are all a greater challenge to load for than I expected.
After reading a little more it seems I can put some of the H335 to use. I've got a lot of that too.

I shoot a 22" 1:10 AR in 204.
I know I tried it. 32g Noslers, also wi H335, H322, H4198, Benchmark(showed promise, but I'm out now ) and...nope that's it.
All those powders with 24gNXT, 26g Varmint grenade, 32gNos(obviously ), and 40g Bergers.
Been feeling discouraged too. Best combo so far, 23.6g of H4198 under 24gNXT or the 26gVG. I get ragged holes once the barrel is hot, but cold it's just 1MOA.

I rechecked my notes, H335 and 32g spitzers showed promise, I was just having a hard time metering it. I was getting velocity deviations up to 150fps with my loads.
Both 32 gr, which I don't care much about because of the flat base, and 40 gr Vmax. Both bullets leave nice little clovers at 100 yds. I believe I used 27 gr on the 32 and 26 on the 40, but work up your own loads.

Zeus, I reckon you know Varget is a tad slow-burning for that cartridge. Hodgdon lists the max load with a 32-gr V-Max as 29.0-gr (compressed) and predicts 3798 fps from 47,400 psi. That's pretty piddling for that light a bullet from the .204.
But I think you can narrow that gap a bit by using a heavier bullet. According to my QuickLoad, using my FF case capacity (32.4-gr) and my barrel length (26"), 100% case fill (~26.3-gr) with Varget should get you about 3550 fps @48K psi from a 39-gr SBK. 106% case fill (~27.9-gr) -- and I'm not sure you can stuff it that full -- should come close to SAAMI max pressure and give you around 3750 fps.
For the 40-gr V-Max, Hodgdon predicts a max load 28.1-gr (compressed), 3647 fps and 55K psi. The highest velocity Hodgdon lists from any of their powders with that bullet is 3774 fps with BL-C(2).
I mentioned the 39-gr SBK because very few shooters with standard twist .204s (1:12) are not able to stabilize that bullet but quite a few report problems with the 40-grainers.

Zeus....never had much luck with Varget in the 204,223 and other similar sized cartridges. Best powders for me in .204 has been RL10X and Hodgdons Benchmark. Both powders give me top accuracy in the 32 gr V Max and 32 gr Blitzkings.
Varget has worked well in my .243 loadings ......
I haven't even had a chance to sight the rifle in yet....so load development is on the back burner until I use up the 200 rounds of factory ammo I got with the gun.
I have a very accurate Varget, 40 grain Vmax load worked up for my Encore .223 with a 12 twist barrel. Now, the case is plenty full and I'm sure I'm still no where near max pressure because of the small bullet with the slow(er) burning powder but the prairie dogs sure can't tell the difference. I've never chrono'd the load so I have no idea how fast it is.....but to tell you the truth I just shoot for accuracy not velocity anymore. I guess I'm getting old....lol
The .204 will be right next to my AR and Encore Pro hunter on my next dog hunt.
Thanks for the input Eric.....
I love me some Varget though.....

Per the Ruger site H322 is the most accurate powder tested with that size bullet. My buddy was messing with a bunch of powders including Varget. I asked him why he was wasting time and money. He tried the H322 load he gets 1/2 groups at 200 with the 32 Gr. Sierra.

I bet if you mixed those picture powders that would add some excitement :D Adam
Don't forget about XBR and Ramshot TAC. Adam
28.3 TAC with 32 gr vmax....accurate,fast clean

Just found this. For anyone looking for .204 load data, there are dozens and dozens of loads here...
