JPG's are smaller in size than GIF files. Therefore, JPG's take up less space and load faster.

It's pretty simple to convert a GIF to a JPG though.

Maybe a later version of the software will be programed to allow it. However, keep in mind that a GIF can be either a static, single picture or an animated GIF. There is a difference in size as well as function. Imagine the boards download time if everyone had a very long animated GIF. That's the most likely reason in my opinion.
