I just bought a small boat (14 ft.) with a 5.5 HP outboard motor . I got it mostly just to take my kids fishing . I am not really much of a fisherman but the kids love to do it . So , my question is .... Do I need a fish finder ? Can I get a less expensive model good enough to help me find fish for the kids to catch ? What features should I look for ?
Any other suggested equipment for a new boater ? Equipment for kids fishing ?
Thanks guys
I don't use my fish finder for that purpose. They are great for finding the bottom structure that you want to fish around. A fishing great once told me to catch fish you need to put the bait in the middle of the fish highway. Fish travel like people. You jump in your car and off down the highway you go with everybody else doing the same. Very few go 4wheeling off the road. Submerged creek channels, sunken trees, underwater points, dropoffs, old road beds are all roads or rest areas for fish. Any fishfinder that works will do.
You just need to find them. Once I find them, I tie my #6 long shack hook on 4 lb test line about 8" from the end. I then attach a split shot sinker on the end. I bounce giant mealworms or euro nightcrawlers 8" off the bottom. I catch big bluegill and the occasional catfish or walleye. Great eating and lots of fun whether you catch fish or not.
