View Full Version : Tying knots to the lure instead of swivels...
Recently, Harry supplied me with the link to a web site with great knot tying instructions (http://www.animatedknots.com/indexfishing.php?LogoImage=LogoGrog.jpg&Website=www.animatedknots.com). He also mentioned that tying it directly to the lure instead of to a swivel gave the lure better, more lifelike range of motion.
Well, being the lazy kinda' guy I am, I like to be able to replace the lure with a different one quickly and easily. Is the difference in the range of motion that significant between the two?
for certain lures. If I am fishing top water, jerk bait, or crank baits, I like the surgeons knot, the loop does improve bait action and the fish take the bait with more gusto. For worms and jigs I tie a regular Palomar knot, possibly the toughest knot I know of.

Pat, I think you must have typed in the wrong knot, for tying on a lure.
The suregons knot is used to tie two lines together...
Knots that tie onto lures that leave a loop to give the lure better action are the uni knot and the Rapala knot. There may be others, but these are the ones I was taught..
I told John, instead of using a big snap swivel, he should tie his lures on with a
"uni knot"... so it leaves a small loop, to give the lure better action..OR put a very small ring on the front of the lure, and tie to that.
Some lures come from the factory with a ring already installed to the front loop of the lure.
Harry
is the knot I am using, thanks. I have a great book by Lefty Kreh and Mark Sosin on knots, it is a great book. I am down to the Palomar and Perfection loop for just about everything.

You can not use a swivle with a spinner or else it will just spin and do nothing.
I use the trilene knot for all my fishing. It works and it is rather easy to tie. I tried a bolen knot once but it just pulled threw workes better with rope than mono.

Great link. I admit I suck at knot tying. this will be a great help. I just have to grab some line and practice a bit. I can't see myself trying to follow a printed version of a guide like this on the shoreline.
thanks

Hi John!
If you do decide to tie to the lure directly make sure you take the swivel off. The lures look pretty stupid to the fish if they have a giant steel booger hanging out of the front:D

I love the uni-knot. It can be tied in the dark (or without reading glasses!). You can tie it to leave a standing loop, a sliding loop or no loop at all. It's great for joining two lines together, also. Just tie one around each line.
