a good pill to take varmint at long range
Not with a 222. Max effective range for RELIABLE kills with a 222 is 200 yds. Anything more than that, the more yardage, the more iffy it gets. Having a little brother that is a Gov't trapper means we have used just about every known cartridge in the book and coyotes are one of his target animals to the tune of several thousand a year. The 222 is the picture post card of a pop gun.

But if it's all you have, the 50gr will get you the most energy and velocity compromise available out of the cartridge. I agree with Charlie's use of VV N133 powder or AA2200 and obviously work up to a max load. We've had the best luck with the Remington 50gr soft points for putting ol Wiley on the ground. They can be a hard find these days but I'd expect any thin skinned varmint bullet would do just fine.

Might be good if you tell us what you consider long range and exactly what kind of varmint are we talking about. Long range to some folks might be 100 yards to others 600-1000. Varmints could be anything from a 1 lb prairie dog to a 50 lb coyote or even a wolf. Help us to help you.

Yup! I agree with the 50 gn pills pushed with as much VV N133 as it will safely hold (mine likes to push 'em around 3200-3300 fps (~975 to 1006 mps). Accuracy (this rifle) to 200m is only reasonable - roughly 5 shots inside a golf ball, but the throat of the rifle is (lets say) past its prime. A fresh barrel would no doubt do much better (the 222 was a BR favorite for decades, ya know.)

We have a good cross section of 22 cal center fire rifles in our group. One member has a 222 his daughter has a 222 Mag, both use 55gr HPBT bullets by Serria.

In fact we buy as a group from thr local reloading supply store this bullet. Normal shots out to 150 yards on a coyote only requires sewing one hole up.

I'm not sure of your twist but use the heaviest bullet your barrel will handle for long range. The nosler 55gr B tips have a good BC if your barrel will handle them. IMR4198 with 50gr bullets is what I like in my 222 but I really don't push it much past 275.
