I'm loading 45-70 for my Browning Highwall. Do I need to crimp or not? If so, should it be a heavy crimp? I'll be loading some 300 and 500 gr bullets with either Varget or IMR4198. Thanks, OD
I would think that a relatively light roll crimp, or even a taper crimp, would be all that you'd need in a single shot. In a lever action you'd need a substantial roll crimp. But then I've only shot (real) black powder in mine so far, so what do I know?
I used to load for a sharps single shot and just used a medium crimp to make the powder burning more uniform with cast 500 grain lyman bullet and a copper gas check on the bullet base.
