A few of the things that are burned into my mind are the ages of the boys who went to war and how many would do that today? They did this voluntarily and of their own free will. Regardless of which side they fought for they fought for what they thought was the good of the country and to preserve the life that they knew. Along those lines, when I visit a battle site I try to put myself into the fray. Today we have roads everywhere. How much does a cannon and the balls weigh? Who hauled that stuff around? Look at the hills and the woods or forests or swamps they encountered. who handled the transportation of goods? The youngest of the Americans in Vietnam were 17 years old and they didn’t all “make it”. We had APCs and trucks. They had nothing unless they brought a family horse or mule with them. They had no MREs, either. We are a soft society.
