Didn't they transplant some elk into KY several years ago? Seems I heard that was pretty successful.
Maybe 20 or more years ago to Far Eastern Kentucky. They have done well and there is an Elk hunting season every year. Donald Trump Jr. Is a big hunter and shooter and he hunts on private land here and has killed at least 2. State Wildlife folks trapped and caught several and sent them to Virginia...and about 6 months ago turned some loose in McQueary County down by Sam Koger and the Tennessee line.
So.
Guess we got Bear, Elk and all we need now is Wild Hawgs, which are 30 miles to th West of here.
Elk roam a lot and may be 10 miles away by now.

Turkeys I think have been the most successful transplants. They don’t even put them in the cities and they flourish there. Next, I think, is elk. They moved some into central Michigan and maybe even by Skruske and they are doing well around Roscommon.

You should have gone out there and chased them off JR, that way you could have something to do for the rest of the day... fix the fence they tore down!!!
They seem to forget they can jump when running from something!
Hmmm, in the past, Kentucky farmers who could prove (?) crop damage from deer could get what they called depradation tags from Fish & Game to kill extra deer on their property. Don't remember if that was just during regular hunting seasons, but I think so. Don't see why the same shouldn't apply to elk, although with our crooked F&G and the rigged elk tag lottery, I have a feeling they won't issue a crop depradation tag involving elk. They'll just tell the poor farmer to suck it up. JR should call and ask that question. Find out what the requirements are.

I thought it Odd the way they approached a fence. They eyed it up and down for at least 30 seconds. First one made a half hearted sideways leap, and got halfway over. It flopped about a bit and finally made it without tearing the fence down.
No hurry, just ambled across the field.
These two have been spotted In the county a few times the past few weeks.
Years ago, they wouldn't have lasted 2 days

As long as the topic is eating elk, my maternal grandmother, who was in her 70s or 80s at the time, was known as the Hot Tamale Queen of Paducah, KY. She got a call one day from a local guy who had been out West and brought home a bunch of elk meat. So, he asked Granny if she'd make up a bunch of tamales using his elk meat. "No problem," says Granny. She said it was real good meat and she thought it tasted very slightly sweet.
