I am the proud owner of a brand spanking new Savage 12FV 223 :D . I took it out to the range and fired 4 shots through it yesterday. cleaned it last night. I bought a nice Weaver V24 scope from ILMO. My rings should be coming in some time this week. I went with the suggestions from this site and got the Burris Signature rings.

any suggestions for a newbie rifle owner? I'll probably zero it in at either 100 or 200 yards. except for my 10-22 squirrel killer, this is my first rifle.

Thanks for all your suggestions ;)

Mounts and rings

What kind of mounts and rings? Weaver type or Leupold type? I have gotten into the good habit of lapping in my rings. When I first started this I was amazed how UN-Square those rings could be.

That is true

That is why I asked what rings and mounts. Make sure you use a good degreaser and clean the screws and holes in the receiver. Brake cleaner works good or carb cleaner. Use blue loctite on the screws. A little bit goes a long way. If they are the turn-in Leupold type you have to make sure that the front and rear rings are square to each other and square to the bore. Weaver mounts there is no turning involved. I have two sets of the Burris Signature rings. Many people think they look ugly. They wont mark your scope though. If your reciever holes were mis-drilled Burris makes an offset kit that will correct that too. Hope this helps.

When to use the inserts

I have not used the Signature Rings, as I prefer to lap my rings, but either the instructions from Burris, or maybe one of the other members here with experience with the Signature Rings can give you the info.

rings

Im one of the few that is not bowled over by burris rings. I dont want to havew to fudge inserts if I dont need to But i dont like normal rear windage rings either. The last 2 sets of rings were 1 piece rings from talley and hart and I bought a scope lap for 1" and 30mm. I would only buy dual dovetail or 1 piece rings, just my preferance, fewer thing to go wrong or come loose.
