Did the gun industry sponsor hunts for gun writers 30-40 years ago? Back in the days of Jack O'Connor, Elmer Kieth etc.

The reason I ask is, when the industry was trotting out a new rifle or cartridge, how much experience did the writer have with the cartridge, rifle, whatever, before he started dispensing his expert opinion and helping us to form ours.

Elmer Keith

Elmer Keith was sponsored many times for his knowledge. He also pioneered many a cartridge, such as the .338 Win. mag. As such it was not called that at the time. A good read if you can get your hands on one is "Hell, I was there". I believe it was one of many Elmer Keith wrote. I have not read and Jack O'Conner yet. But plan to in the future. Merry christmas!
