with the cost of the Rem700 40x rimfires, it may be more economical to get a new/used rimfire rifle from the CMP.

CMP let a lot of them out the door last Summer/Fall. I saw several here in central IN at shows ranging from great to so-so. Going price was around $900± - without sights. At that rate, you might have him think about an older Anschutz match rifle.

I was lucky enough to get one of the 40x rimfires from the CMP when they were released. I got a very nice model and I did see lots of them for sale on the web shortly afterwards for about the same money. Shame really, lots of guys bought them just to sell them.
That Kimber 22 rimfire is an excellent rifle for $600, but if funds are a concern, the H&R is a much cheaper alternative just to get the kid started at a lower price.
