Good morning, GoGo. It's 31 in Louisville, going to 46, with sun for the first time in several days. It spit snow and "wintry mix" off and on yesterday and a hard snow shower around sundown dumped about 1/4 inch that's still on the ground.
I've been AWOL all week, but I have a good excuse: rifle deer season. Sunday morning I killed a 50-pound doe. Normally I'd let one like that grow, but she came in by herself and when there's only one deer I have a really hard time judging size. My rule in that case is "If it don't have spots, take the shot." I made up for it on Wednesday morning by killing a 99-pound doe. Naturally when I shot the small one I had a buddy right there to help drag, but the 99-pounder I had to hump up the hill all by myself. Being old and fat is going to kill me one of these days, but not that day.
After killing, dragging and skinning on Wednesday, I had already planned to take Thursday off. I woke up about 4 a.m. when my CPAP started and stopped about 4 times in a row before finally stopping for good. Turns out we'd had an overnight ice storm and 125,000 Jefferson county homes were without power. I fired up my kerosene lamps and a kero heater, then took Miss Cindy to IHOP about 9:30. Felt a lot like Doug Roberts as I ate my pancakes. Power was out until about 5 p.m. and I was a happy camper at that point.
I thought about hunting today, but decided to take another day off and get my venison cut and wrapped. I still have Saturday and Sunday at the private arboretum south of Louisville where I hunt. I've seen some real heavy 8-pointers brought in this year and would really be tickled to bring one home this weekend.
That's about it for the ol' Carpman. Y'all have a good day and be safe out there. If you're hunting, WEAR YOUR SAFETY HARNESS. And if you're driving WEAR YOUR SEAT BELT.
