Hi,

Seeing the recent posts about snipe hunting in Florida got me interested in finding some old pictures from the Philippines 20 years ago.

If I got it right this is a picture of the two kinds of snipe we hunted. On the left are Painted Snipe, male and female. The others are Common Snipe, no noticable difference between male and female. They both lived together in the rice paddies. The Common Snipe were more common, I would guess 2/3 were common vs the painted. Maybe more.

We would walk along the dikes through the rice paddies. The hard part was staying on top some were narrow and most were wet mud. We had local kids as bird boys. A dollar or two and some birds and they would fetch and carry the birds all day.

Snipe contest

We had a big snipe shoot contest one year. I didn't do so good because the gun I was using kept jamming. I had a semi-auto of some type, don't remember what. It kept jamming closed after each shot. It got to the point where it was almost impossible to open. If it had just turned into a single shot I would be happy but as it was it was unusable so I had to give up early after only a dozen or so birds.

Here's the total for the day.
