I recently had my gun smith remove the .204 Ruger barrel from my Savage Target action and chamber an X-Caliber barrel 20 VarTarg and install it on the Savage Target action. The casings will extract from the chamber, but drop off the bolt loooooong before they get back far enough in the action to eject.

Does anyone have a solution to this problem???? If so, I sure would appreciate hearing what you did to solve it.

Thanks in advance.

Silverfox, I'm no expert, but I know that Remington had to change the position of the extractor on the 700 bolt in order to be able to fully extract the very short cases like the 221 FB and 17FB - and the 20VT. You might need to see if Savage has done a similar mod for the Savage, or that is being done for a custom bolt head for the Savage. Maybe try Savage Shooting Supply in Ohio to ask your question.

I also know that Savages also need to watch for a tolerance stack up issue for adequate primary and secondary extraction on some action. I believe the pieces of the Savage bolt can be tightened up with some special washers to make the extraction better. I am glad both of my Savages single shots are working fine.
