"There's never been this much political corruption!"

If there's anything that gets my blood pressure up, it's listening to both liberals and conservatives rant and rave about political corruption. Frequently they'll say things like, "It's NEVER been this bad in the United States!" History was never my favorite or best subject in school, but I did have one college professor who made it pretty darned interesting. And I know from his classes and from reading that the United States has had politicians and political incidents every bit this bad, and maybe worse. I don't mean to diminish our current troubles, but when people fret about a president or a party setting up a dictatorship, I do have to chuckle.

As an example, I was just now doing some light research about Union Gen. Ambrose Burnside. In his Wikipedia entry, I found the following:

So, the next time your friends say they're losing sleep because Sleepy Joe is going to use the military to round up conservatives or to bash in doors and "it's never been this bad," you can educate them a little ... or at least try. If this passage interests you, there's more here.

“Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” Winston Churchill.

Great post Mike. Lots of people talk in extremes and I find it hard to take them serious. I’ve heard some say about whoever is in office” He is the worst president we’ve ever had”. They probably can’t name half of our past presidents and know even less about what they did.
I also disagree that our country is in the worst shape it’s ever been. Times are definitely not good right now but they’ve been much worse. One reason it seems worse is because we are bombarded with 24-hour gloom and doom media.

CNN and MSNBC are nonstop Left Wing commentary and supportive of Anydamthing the Democrat party does.
FOX News is mostly Right Leaning commentary and supportive of Republican policies.
I don't watch much of either, because there is NOTHING either can Do to change my mind on my beliefs.
I do think the Alphabet Agencies (FBI, ATF, CIA, IRS) have been hijacked at the highest levels of leadership to crack down on what they call MAGA Domestic Terrorists. Agents that have dissenting opinions have been fired...just like the U.S. Military.
Example:
Kyle Rittenhouse was in jail with a $2,000,000 bail for shootin (in self defense) an ANTIFA slimeball, and was Found Not Guilty.
Fella in I think North Dakota? Ran over a Teenager...on Purpose, because he was a Republican. And ADMITTED he did so, IS OUT on $50,000 bail right now.
IF that was MY Teenager he just murdered....I would hunt him down and kill him real slow....Indian Like

Well said all 3 of you. Just about everyone I know doesn’t like Trump but he was a leader and not a politician. That was our only choices. The human heart can be a very evil thing. That has been proven through history. I pray there is a turning point soon in this nation like it has in the past.

There's no compromise. There's no civility. Everybody's painting with a BROAD brush. You agree with me or you're a terrorist/communist/socialist/racist/sexist or some combination thereof.

@Gabriel I do not doubt that a lot of people you know hate Trump; after all you live in a Liberal Hotbed of Oregon.
Trump carried every county in Kentucky the last election except Lexington and Louvil counties. Fayette and Jefferson. Some counties went 10-1 for Trump. We have college towns like Berea which are as far Leftist as Portland.
It depends on the Crowd you associate yourself with and I just don't mess with Liberals...I spend my time around Friendly folks...why make yourself miserable and upset??
Last night at the Sold Out Creed Fisher show was a Perfect Example.
My people.

Trump, you can either love him or hate him, but he is the man who can and will get the job done. If Nov doesnt make a drastic difference in politics, one better not make any negative government comments on open forums, because the next thing you will hear is the gestapo banging on your door. Vote every RINO and Liberal out when it's your turn to vote. LDS

Give me Trump any day. DeSantis I would feel comfortable as well . DeSantis has done a excellent job in Florida. No need to bash the one in office he is doing that to himself but I bet he will go away smelling like a rose.
Fellas, since I started this thread, I'll police it before Charlie or George does: The intent of this thread was to talk about history and what we can learn from it in terms of previous national troubles. The goal is not to make it a "Yay, Trump!" or "Yay, Biden" thread. Most of us already know how the rest of us lean on party politics. Can we focus here a little more on what we the people need to do (if anything) to right the ship of state, assuming you think we're listing. What have Americans done in the past that has helped? Think beyond remove/elect one man.

Well, I don't think any one election can change the direction of the USA is headed.
Culture is constantly evolving...out w the Old...in with the New.
When you GIVE a group of people "Something" The Die is cast. You can't start taking it back. Tell people "You don't have to Work" they figure that they NEVER gonna have to work ever again.
Tell people that they don't have to obey the "Laws and the Police" and they just do as they wish as in the WaWa store that was invaded by a bunch of black teenagers a couple days ago.
It's a DamShame that ABOUT all the Potential Candidates for POTUS are a bunch of Arrogant assholes. The Last TWO fit in this category.

Just discussed the current state of affairs this morning over breakfast. It’s my belief that it will take a long time to “right the ship”. Possibly more than one election cycle assuming they both go the right way, pun intended.

As for corruption, I think it’s just business as usual. Thanks to the internet, more of it comes to light today. Politician has always been a dirty word.

Stick to history, I will try my best.
This is an interesting crowd here to say the least, most if not all are old and opinionated.
The history part, every single one of us is involved in some major history if you are posting here.
The internet I thought was a wonderful thing, I mean just look at the resources you have at ones finger tips.
Stop and look back to the 70’s and mid 80’s.Maybe we were less informed at that time? Yet to what I recall there were a lot more happy people.

I believe social media is one of the greatest downfalls for this country if not the world.
There is nothing in history books to learn from, we are in a position that makes history and will be learned about in the future. That is if it is taught to the fullest on truth and not how one interprets it or their opinion.
To many things have gotten to the schools and taught that are opinions and not facts.

All I got to say.
