Looks like chicken wire? What are the studs on the side of the stock? Do they hold the barrel in or are they to dampen the harmonics?

It looks like a metal honeycomb, probably aluminum. How thick is it? Honeycomb is used a lot in aerospace structures because it is light and stiff in the right direction - perpendicular to the hexagons.

That is glare from the lighting. Vents in the side of the stock for barrel cooling

I agree with Tinman looks like a honeycomb laid in the epoxy to add strength and maybe keep the epoxy together. Kind like steel mesh in concrete?

Took weight out and reinforced with lighter material.

It may or may not reduce weight based on it composition, but it definitely stabilizes the laminate stock for end/barrel channel area.

I like the chicken wire suggestion. I'd grind it out with an angle grinder and replace it with JB Weld. Not saying that has worked all that well for me, but it'd be fast.

I was aware of that, but I bet someone still might still know what it is. Then again, maybe not.
