Hey all. I have a few questions about the 7 Shooting Times Westerner. I need some of you experienced old hands to tell me all about this cartridge. I have read the little bits in the front of the loading manuals. Anything I should know? Like bullets it prefers and powder? I was offered a Ruger #1 in this caliber to play with. I was wondering if it was worth my time? I already have a 7 SAUM and a 7 Rem Mag. I know those #1's can be really finicky. Should I give it a pass or not? Thanks a lot for the help and advice.

7mm Stw

Had one since 1989 when it was a wildcat. The Layne Simpson in Shooting Times had perked my interest in it. keithcandler is another board member that can give you a lot of 7MM STW information.

My best luck was with 139-140 Gr. bullets and H1000 3550 fps. 160 Gr range of bullets did the very best with H5010 a hair over 3350 fps. Accuracy is very good my gun seemed to shoot better the hotter I loaded it.

Very good performance on deer to beyond 400 yards is my personal experience with the 140 Gr. bullet weight.

I zero my gun for two hundred it's just point and shoot to over 300 yards.

It real advantage is long range and I would opt for a gun other than the Ruger number 1.

number one

Unfortunately the Ruger was what was offered to me. I am trying to decide to put forth the time, money and effort to make a load for it. I hate to look a gift rifle in the bore so to speak....:D Are they barrel burners? This is an older, used rifle. I havent even laid eyes on it yet. I am terribly afraid I will fall in love with it if I fondle it.

Are they barrel burners if it is a CM barrel expect around 7 to 8 hundred rounds SS will probably buy you 12 to 15 hundred rounds. I'm on my second barrel the first one was CM at 750 rounds the accuracy was noticeably degraded. Good enough for hunting but not real LD type stuff I was interested in. Before you buy this rifle I would look at the throat real closely with a bore scope. If I couldn't do that I'd pay a I'm going to have to rebarrel it price.

I bought a pound of H1000 and right off the label is what I loaded and it shoots like a house on fire. I shot at 1000 yards with it with that load 2 days after loading and zeroing the scope. I had 3 10 ring hits and I think the score on that target was an 88. Keep in mind this is a Remington Sendero and the trigger isn't the best and I was shooting prone with a bipod and it was my first try at shooting at 1k. If memory serves it was something like 80.6 gr of H1000 and 160 gr Nosler Accubonds. Pretty dang good for my deer rifle. ;)

I would say barrel life is not very good. I built a pair of them for a guy a couple years back. If I remember right they had #1 Liljas on them. When he picked them up he shot a composit group (5 rounds from each) that measured .750. After about 700 rounds near as he can figure he called and told me the groups had opened up and it was now shooting about 1.5". didn't really supprise me as the guy tends to shoot things hot.

In my STW

The best powder I found was RL22. Now I did not shoot any bullets over 140 grains. For the 120's - 140's you will find it hard to beat RL22.

Not a finky caliber in my experience and my rifle was super accurate shooting 120 and 140 grain Ballistic Tips. I never did get the velocity as high as published even though the rifle had a 26" barrel and the loads were at book max.

Recoil is quite tame for such a big case in my Sendero.

I have a ruger no 1 that has around 400- 450 rounds through it with 140-150 gr nosler ballistic tip reloads. But I don't let the barrel get hot either. Mine does best with imr 7828 @82.0 grns and rl22 @76.0 for the 150 gr. I am in the process of building a load for 100 gr hp by sierra for it if it will shoot that light a bullet that is found a load for 83.6 grs of rl22 but i'll drop it a bit to start n work up.I have killed whitetails at over 400 yds and they go nowhere.

Mike Bryan built my....

6.5 STW and it's a dream long-range rifle. I sighted it in and use just use it for those "long" shots on deer and the occasional coyote that wants to hang-up way out there. Just using it for 6-8 shots a year, I imagine it will last several life-times. I don't take it to the range and play with it.

beyond 400 yards out to 1000 or a bit more the STW has a definate advantage over most other factory .284 cartridges.
My STW is a lilja barreled custom build, an awesome hunting rifle.
You guys wanna extend your barrel life in these big jugs, try ball powder, its temp sensative but the flame temp is alot less, so it doesn't get nearly as hot, its also less abrasive on the throat then extruded powders.
